For anyone who's ever been attracted by the tranquility and equanimity of Zen, yet put off by the massive tomes written on it, this book, in its lyrical simplicity, will allow you to feel zen.

Clear and Concise

Of the many books I have read concerning the subject of Zen Buddhism, none can be considered more lucid, succint, and enthralling than this book. Herrigel's knack for brevity will be more than welcome to the Occidental who has searched for such a book. Authors such as Alan Watts, and especially D.T. Suzuki have no qualms about making the claim that Zen eschews verbosity and does not espouse any sort of philosophy, and that it lacks the abstraction of Westerners. However, after reading these works, my head reeled with the constant paradoxes set forth by Suzuki who consistently and simultaneously reminded me that I wouldn't understand such subjects until enlightened. This led me to wonder...then why have you written you a 300 page book describing such an experience? No matter though; what THIS book is is a wonderful account of the changes and insights that happen to a person willing to give himself to the path that Zen offers.

I have been a practicing zen buddhist for over 27 years, including spending time in a zen monastery, and have never found a book (excluding his first, "zen in the art of archery", also a must read) that more completely captured the essence of zen (and life).

History really works

This book was written shortly before the collapse of the USSR. So a narrow criticism could bash it for not forecasting such a big event. However, history is not forecasting, and this is a very good history book. Cohen refuses to fall into the Western bias trap, and therefore feeds the reader with valuable insight rarely ever found in Western books about the East. For example, Cohen insists on the strong link between conservative public opinions and the former USSR's government policies, as opposed to the formulaic view of a Soviet state in harsh opposition to its own people: this kind of insight does more to help understanding post-communist Russia's political developments than most tired Western litanies about Russia.

Hilarious 1980s fashions

This is one of my toddler's favorite books. But what makes it a hoot are the 1980s fashions: big thick hair and Dad with button-down shirt tucked into jeans. The wife also had to borrow a pie pan from Ms. Dee... come on, you can get a pie pan for 50 cents!

"The Fifth Agreement" is the sequel to "The Four Agreements," which outlines a simple foundation for a happy life that anyone can implement regardless of one's religion or lack of one. They convey the core of the Toltec shamanic tradition in a nutshell: Be impeccable with your word; don't take things personally; don't make assumptions; and do your best.

Don Miguel Ruiz wrote that bestseller 12 years ago, and now has written "The Fifth Agreement" with his son, don Jose. The fifth agreement is deceptively simple, yet incredibly profound. It states, "Be skeptical but learn to listen." While the first four agreements deal with our relationship to ourselves and how to create a happy life, the fifth agreement deals with our relationship to others, and how to create a better world.

"The Fifth Agreement" asks us to be skeptical and use discernment when listening others, and to understand that everyone has his or her own perspective and agenda reflected in their words. It is up to us to discern the truth behind the words, but always to be respectful of another's right to his or her views, even if we don't share them. Each of us is the artist of our own life, the director of our own play, and we can make it an adventure or a drama - heaven or hell, it's up to us.

The first part of the book reviews the first four agreements, discussing how the meanings we attribute to symbols define us culturally. I just this minute finished reading don Miguel's new book, The Fifth Agreement, for the first time. It opens with a recap of the first four agreements, which is a little draggy if you've read The Four Agreements three times, but which is still worth reading because it is a reminder of the ramifications of the four agreements, and a chance to refocus on them in a new light. The fifth agreement, be skeptical, but learn to listen, is a stealth stunner.It seems simple and basic, but it's one of those that if carried to it's obvious conclusion, leads to complete freedom. In sum, it is a great book, a book to read, and reread, and read again. It is a book to practice and to live.
Don Miguel has a great knack for taking "keep it simple, stupid" to it's optimum.
Get it. Read it. Live it.

Fifth Agreement IS NOT anything like the Four Agreements

The Four Agreements is by far one of THE best books ever written. Four principles that make life enjoyable and rewarding. It is a MUST read.

The Fifth Agreement is very hard to read (rambling), way too time consuming and never gets the point across.

It should tell you something that he was able to convey the 4 principles in 160 pages but it took 228 pages to convey the fifth.

I give any book a 1 star that I couldnt finish..tried many times but when i found myself skimming the pages, I just gave up.

Save your time, money and just reread The Four Agreements.
