History really works

This book was written shortly before the collapse of the USSR. So a narrow criticism could bash it for not forecasting such a big event. However, history is not forecasting, and this is a very good history book. Cohen refuses to fall into the Western bias trap, and therefore feeds the reader with valuable insight rarely ever found in Western books about the East. For example, Cohen insists on the strong link between conservative public opinions and the former USSR's government policies, as opposed to the formulaic view of a Soviet state in harsh opposition to its own people: this kind of insight does more to help understanding post-communist Russia's political developments than most tired Western litanies about Russia.

This book could be a parallel to Immanuel Goldstein's secret book in 1984. See the Soviet Union from a critical yet unbiased viewpoint for the first time and ideologically stick it to the powers that be.
