He is the author of 39 books and the coauthor of two additional books. Jerry has a master's degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and has more than five years of experience as an adjunct instructor teaching networking courses in information technology.

Good starting point for learning PowerShell

In order to improve efficiency of work flow, I wanted to learn Windows PowerShell so that I can automate many of our daily tasks. I have years of .Net and C# experience but very little operating system scripting experience so this seemed a good place to start.
Just as the title says this book is for someone who is just starting out with operating system scripting. It will be beneficial to have a working understanding of the operating system including file structure, logs, and Windows registry but not essential to have much programming background. However, the book does a good job at explaining the basic concepts for everyone.
The format is a high level overview of a PowerShell tool followed by writing a script to shows how that tool can be used. There are a few places in the book where they could use some better editing. For example, in chapter 10 the author refers to both the ErrorRecord object and the Error-Record object. ErrorRecord is correct but this could be confusing when trying to get syntax correct. These problems are fairly minor but can be confusing.
Overall the book is exactly as advertised. Something to give you a high level overview of a new tool and enough basic knowledge to jump into more advanced training without being overwhelmed.

Great book for beginners

It is a really good book so far for beginners like me, who had very little exposure to Powershell programming. I only find one mistake so far, it is on page 24, one of the commands for enabling Remoting is not correct. You will get an error message. I Google it and the answer was right there at the top result. The book is so new that there is no errata on the web site yet.
I am half way through the book so far and the way it is taught is by using game examples. Which keeps it interesting.

I think this is a great book. I loved it

I think this is a great book. I loved it. It would be good for a beginner. It took me about 2 to 3 hours to go through each chapter. There was tedious typing for the examples so I skipped typing them in. I just read them carefully and made sure I understood them. Apparently you can download the examples.
I had just finished a PowerShell class with another beginners book ( Learn Windows PowerShell in a Month of Lunches by Don Jones and Jeffery D. Hicks, published by Manning ) and this book filled in a few missing pieces.
