This analytic approach enables students to trace the changes in mutual perceptions and preferences between terrorists and their targets and leads to a fuller understanding of the causes and dynamics of political violence.

The book’s uniquely comprehensive coverage of terrorism includes extended cases on the IRA, the Tamil Tigers, Chechen rebels, Al Qaeda, Aum Shinrikyo, Hizbullah, and Hamas. Each case looks at the historical origins, political factors, leadership, and organization of the group to give context. Discussions of typical tactics, patterns of violence, the role of external actors, and outcomes help readers to explore possible solutions that might stop the cycle of violence and promote peaceful coexistence among the antagonists.

About the Author
R. Hrair Dekmejian is a professor of political science and international business at the University of Southern California. His specialties include comparative political violence, Middle East/Islamic studies, political elites, multinational business and politics, U.S. foreign policy, the political economy of oil, and comparative ethnic politics. Professor Dekmejian has appeared as a commentator on world affairs on radio and television and is quoted in major newspapers and publications. A U.S. Army veteran, Dekmejian has served as a consultant to various agencies including the Department of State, the U.S. Information Agency, and the Department of Defense. He is the author of numerous books and articles including Islam in Revolution; Troubled Waters: The Geopolitics of the Caspian Region; and The Just Prince: A Manual of Leadership.

In the summer of 2014, Gaza was attacked by Israel for the fourth time since 2006. This attack lasted fifty-one days. Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian doctor, had worked at al-Shifa Hospital during each previous conflict, and in July 2014 he went back there. While he was helping the wounded, he kept a camera in the pocket of his green operating scrubs. In this book, he tells the story in words and images of the fifteen days of bombing and human suffering that he witnessed. At the same time, this book is a tribute to the courage, endurance and almost inconceivably strong spirit of Palestinian health workers and volunteers, a spirit replicated throughout the severely tested society of Gaza, occupied Palestine.

About the Author
Mads Gilbert is the Medical Director of the Clinic of Emergency Medicine at the University Hospital of North Norway and a professor at the University of Tromso (UiT), the Arctic University of Norway. In addition to his work in Norway, since the 1980s he has been heavily involved in medical solidarity work around the world, carrying out training programmes and helping war wounded patients in Burma, Angola, Afghanistan, Cambodia and Lebanon, among other places. Over the last fifteen years, his medical solidarity work has been mostly in Gaza, occupied Palestine. Gilbert has also been an active member of the Red Party (Rodt) and has served several terms as a councillor in the county of Troms. He has published a number of textbooks, and his book Eyes in Gaza, written together with Dr Erik Fosse, was translated into English in 2010. Gilbert was appointed a Commander of the Order of St Olav in 2013, in recognition of his international work and his services to emergency medicine in Norway.

Dr. Mads Gilbert has worked in Gaza for 20 years and has documented the horrific carnage of never ending Israeli attacks on the people of Gaza. From the foreword by C. G. Jung (1956): "The problem this book is concerned with is one in which I, too, have been interested for a long time. It is now exactly fifty years since I learned, thanks to the association experiment, the role which complexes play in our conscious life . . . Dr. Jacobi has made it her task, in this book, to expound the important connection on the one hand between the individual complex and the universal, instinctual archetype, and on the other hand between this and the symbol. The appearance of her study is the more welcome to me in that the concept of the archetype has given rise to the greatest misunderstandings and -- if one may judge by the adverse criticisms -- must be presumed to be very difficult to comprehend. Anyone, therefore, who has misgivings on this score can seek information in this volume, which also takes account of much of the literature."

Good starting point for learning PowerShell

In order to improve efficiency of work flow, I wanted to learn Windows PowerShell so that I can automate many of our daily tasks. I have years of .Net and C# experience but very little operating system scripting experience so this seemed a good place to start.

Just as the title says this book is for someone who is just starting out with operating system scripting. It will be beneficial to have a working understanding of the operating system including file structure, logs, and Windows registry but not essential to have much programming background. However, the book does a good job at explaining the basic concepts for everyone.

The format is a high level overview of a PowerShell tool followed by writing a script to shows how that tool can be used. There are a few places in the book where they could use some better editing. For example, in chapter 10 the author refers to both the ErrorRecord object and the Error-Record object. ErrorRecord is correct but this could be confusing when trying to get syntax correct. These problems are fairly minor but can be confusing.

Overall the book is exactly as advertised. Something to give you a high level overview of a new tool and enough basic knowledge to jump into more advanced training without being overwhelmed.

Great book for beginners

It is a really good book so far for beginners like me, who had very little exposure to Powershell programming. I only find one mistake so far, it is on page 24, one of the commands for enabling Remoting is not correct. You will get an error message. I Google it and the answer was right there at the top result. The book is so new that there is no errata on the web site yet.

I am half way through the book so far and the way it is taught is by using game examples. Which keeps it interesting.

I think this is a great book. I loved it

I think this is a great book. I loved it. It would be good for a beginner. It took me about 2 to 3 hours to go through each chapter. There was tedious typing for the examples so I skipped typing them in. I just read them carefully and made sure I understood them. Apparently you can download the examples.
I had just finished a PowerShell class with another beginners book ( Learn Windows PowerShell in a Month of Lunches by Don Jones and Jeffery D. Hicks, published by Manning ) and this book filled in a few missing pieces.

I would like to say thank you for your perfect sharing. I expect to come out this book before 2012 and I have been learn without guide line.
Once I read yours, I notice that you didn't explain how to collaborate Robot Structure with other structure related application as BIM basic, and CSi products.
So I hope, you will be come out for next Professional or advance reference book soon. I would like to advise to include above items for widely usage for structure designer or engineer.

Great book for learning Autodesk Robot

Very good book for beginners in Robot.
Telling a lot of hidden features and describing many advanced features that is impossible to learn in Robot's helpfile.
The book is pedagogic as well.
I will recommend it to both beginners and normal users and i hope that Ken Marsh will write a book for even more advanced users very soon.

About the Author
The authors: Mark Tribe is an Assistant Professor of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. He founded Rhizome.org, an online resource for the New Media art community. His art work has been exhibited at the ZKM Center for Art and Media and the Ars Electronica Festival, and he has curated exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and MASS MoCA. Reena Jana is a New York-based critic and editor. She has written on contemporary art and digital culture for a variety of publications, including Artforum, Art and Auction, Art in America, ARTnews, Bookforum, Flash Art, frieze, The New York Times, and Wired.

Good Graphics

I recently became interested in the aesthetics of media art. This book provided an introduction to this new (to me) form of artistic expression. Living in the hinterlands has perhaps limited my perceptions. There really is more to art than another red rock painting. I would highly recommend this book. Good graphics, my only link to the outside world.

Taschen was too quick to define "New Media"

This book is worth the $10 or so if you want to see a random assortment of New Media pieces for your own inspiration, but don't count on it as a definitive measure of what "New Media Art" is. To that point, this book contains a lot of examples of "Net Art".

A Monumental and Monumentally Important Work

This is a monumental, well researched, and highly technical book outlining prehistory in several parts of the world (Europe, Western Asia, Japan, China, Korea, the Americas, Oceania, Australia and Southeast Asia) as it pertains to women. The authors are trained in art, design, linguistics, anthropology and sociology – a good mix of expertise, since much of what we know about prehistory comes from the art and artifacts left by prehistoric peoples, as well as from comparative linguistics.

In general this is a book to be taken very seriously, since it presents sterling evidence indicating that when women are cut out of the political aspects of any society, that society takes a turn for the worse: into war, violence and social hierarchy. Conversely, when women are given an equal share of power they help create societies free of institutionalized warfare, violence and social stratification. The authors present evidence for this from the past as well as from some of those few societies left in which a few elite males at the top of the social hierarchy don’t dominate everyone else around them.

The authors in some cases compare their prehistoric data with data from modern societies in the same geographic locations, including the Mosuo, for example, of China, the Ainu of Japan, and some of the historic Native North American tribal groups.

This highly academic book is packed with detailed archaeological, anthropological and linguistic data and information. The book includes over 400 pages, most of them text pages filled with small print. I’d have bought the book for the bibliography alone, which runs to 40 pages and includes hundreds of up-to-date and serious sources on the topic, many of them published by some of America’s major universities. And unlike many modern book indexes, this one is not computer generated but actually includes subheadings under many of the major subject headings.

The book includes between 200 and 250 well-done charts, figures and line drawings, many of which depict prehistoric female figurines. Personally I’ve not seen a better worldwide sampling of prehistoric female figurines in any other source; the authors include them from each of the world continents as well as from Oceania. And the fact that they’ve all been drawn by the same artist (one of the authors) makes it easy to compare figurines from one time-and-place location to any other.

Regaining the history of women.

Excellent book. As an anthropologist I can tell you that the book is well based in fact. It's tough to argue with archaeology. In fact, it's impossible to argue with artifacts.
