Dictionary for Thinkers

This is a thinker's dictionary, not a guide to road signs and icons. The editors took the trouble to recruit symbol experts from many different professions, ranging from the paranormal to the skeptical academic. The result is a dictionary with entries that have more depth than the usual "quick hits" that other symbolism dictionaries give you. Chevalier is not afraid to give contradictory or contrasting meanings of icons. (He is not a universalist, but a relativist.) He is usually careful to identify the culture in which a particular meaning is given. I keep this in easy reach on my bookshelf, reminding myself, however, that no dictionary on this subject can possibly cover all the meanings a symbol may have. It is worth having around.

i have known this dictionary in the french original for about 20 years now and recommend it again and again to students. i have always hoped that it could become available for non french readers. finally! as a jungian analyst, i find the dictionary extremely helpful: it does an extraordinary job of displaying the breadth of symbolic meanings involved in so many symbols that are still very much alive in people today. the refence to various cultures is especially important in our multi-cultural world.. i am very thankful for this translation into english and hope the german translation will follow soon.

Disappointed with Amazon

While this is certainly an interesting reference tool, the book Amazon keeps in stock as 'The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols' is not the one pictured. The book that this page leads you to believe you are buying is quite a bit shorter, but actually gives illustrations of the symbols (I used to own a copy of it). The book that Amazon sells on this page is a fairly useful reference book, but lacks the imagery of the one pictured, which some buyers may be seeking.

The author attempts to give readers a sense of this excitement immediately by starting with a nonmathematical crash course in DSP In the chapters that follow, examples frequently focus on real-life sounds—such as speech, whale songs, and seismic vibrations—and on real-life images—such as fingerprints, bacteria, and airport X-rays. The accompanying CD provides links between graphs and sounds, and allows readers to hear for themselves the "before" and "after" of processing. Once the necessary theory has been covered, in-depth applications of speech recognition, image processing, motor control, and encryption are studied, among others.

All key concepts of DSP are covered in this text, including details of how to perform transforms and design filters. This coverage is heavily supported by examples throughout. To make the ideas as accessible as possible, no calculus is used at all in the main text. Filter design is taken care of in Chapters 9 and 10, for both finite impulse response and infinite impulse response filters. Practical aspects are covered beginning with Chapter 11, which discusses discrete and fast Fourier transforms, followed by Chapters 12 and 13, which examine DSP hardware and programming issues. Applications of DSP for sounds and images are investigated in Chapters 14 and 15. Finally, Chapter 16 provides a description of wavelet theory and applications. Appendix A contains "The Math You Need," while the other appendices prove claims made in the text so that the text may stand on its own, without the need for outside references. End-of-chapter summaries and questions are provided for each chapter. The accompanying CD includes sample sounds, images, data, and video sequences for most chapters, as well as software for spectrograms and wavelets. The sun symbol in the margin of the text indicates that illuminating material is available on the CD. Matlab files and examples of how to use them are included on the CD to permit the reader to verify methods presented in the text. These files can also be used to solve many end-of-chapter problems with ease. Quick tests of basic chapter concepts are provided on the CD as well. The instructor's manual includes solutions to text problems, laboratories based on Matlab and the Analog Devices ADSP-2181 EZ-KIT Lite DSP development kit, and laboratory guides. It is accompanied by a CD containing PowerPoint® slides of key text graphics, as well as laboratory documents and solution set files. Because the mathematical requirements of this text are moderate, the book can be used as early as the second year of a college engineering or technology program. Indeed, the only downside to finishing the text is that I will have to start doing dishes again. My children—Stevin, Jesika, and Eric—will be joyful when my time is theirs again, as will I.

Jessy and Eric say this book will make you smarter. I hope they're right. Of course, their other idea was to use it to start the campfire: There's a lesson here somewhere.

Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing

This book is not as lucid as some of the other reviews have been ranting about on the internet. You really have to submerge yourself in reading as if you were a reading a novel to fully pinpoints some of the imperative formulas and vital methods in understand the author's intention. Posing as an advanced digital signal processing book without answers to check at the end of chapter's questions is just a loss for words; and very careless. Even if you have bought the hardcover edition that comes with the CD is nearly useless, unless you are an instructor and can benefit from the quizzes, samples of wave files, and lab works. The CD, however, does not provide step-by-step solution nor does it have the answers to the end of chapter's questions. My point is not to get answers but, it would be nice to know if I am on the right track after spending 2 hours figuring out the problems and not to mention the reading time. I do not recommend this book on its own. This book is for serious readers that can absorb the concepts and methods from reading or someone with great understand of digital signal processing and just need a supplemental book.

This book is choice!

I recently took my first DSP class and it was taught by none other than Joyce Van de Vegte herself using this text. DSP has some fairly difficult concepts, but this text explains them very well.
Joyce is an excellent instructor, and I find the book is written in the exact same way that she explains them in class. Concepts are explained only as technically as necessary. This makes the text much easier to read and understand the first time around and most technical texts fail in this area.

Learning how to pray

Organized into short chapters that can be read in one sitting, this book helped me along my personal prayer journey. The author's vast experience is shared through often unpublished extracts of his writings, and "unpacked" by the commentary that brings contemplative prayer into ordinary, daily life. It was a great help and remains a mainstay in my search to be faithful to daily silent prayer.

Help to Avoid Falling into the "Heresy of Activism"

This is one of the most concise books I have read on the link between contemplative prayer and fruitful action. In our current age, when "activism" alone (cut off from prayer and fasting) can become its own kind of heresy (in God or Nothing: A Conversation on Faith, Robert Cardinal Sarah even speaks of the "heresy of activism"), this book leads the believer into a deeper union with God, the source of everything good and the wellspring of every effective action. Highly recommended!

Despite some weaknesses in the story, I so enjoyed reading about these fae creatures and their unique features, both physically and in the use of their magic skills. My favorite character was the villain because he was accurately described, desperate, constantly seeking new ways to impart his vengeance, but he didn't scare me or surprise me. He didn't disappoint me either and he kept the story interesting while constantly challenging the main characters. There is also a love triangle in the story, but I had no trouble choosing who I think Alannah should end up with.

The biggest problem I had with this story were the grammar mistakes; they stood out to me and were somewhat distracting at times. However, this is a great fantasy book that gives readers a clean adventure story with flawed characters and heroic ones finding their way and bringing justice as they do so. I even relate to Alannah in a way; she's the daughter of a King, she's extremely sheltered, and she has abilities that she doesn't understand until she is forced to use them. Yet during the course of certain hardships she faces, she finds herself and is determined to do the right thing. B.C. Morin is a gifted author and shows the reader that her stories will only continue to improve.

A Fantastic Read!!

I first heard about this book way back before it was published and I lapped up all of the photo teasers that the author would post on her facebook page. The premise of the story really appealed to me but it was the visual teasers that really got me interested.

Mark of the Princess took me a little while to get into. For me, there seemed to be an abundance of characters and the chapters or portions of chapters at the beginning of the book seemed to be quite short. At around the 20% mark it was like a light bulb went off in my head and everything seemed to click into place for me and my slow old brain had managed to work out who everyone was and how they all fit into the story and then I couldn't put it down!!

Faerie Princess Alannah has led a somewhat sheltered life as the result of her parents being quite protective. It's while out one day with her sister, Princess Evyette that Alannah is kidnapped and taken to the incredibly dark and evil Maligo who has learnt of the extraordinary powers that Alannah will one day possess. It's while she is attempting to escape from Maligo's evil clutches that she encounters Brennus who is also being held captive. Together they make attemp to make their way to safety whilst coming under the constant attacks from the evil forces that lurk along the way.

While the main focus of the story is Alannah we get incites into the other characters, Brennus, Evyette, Tristan and Kaleb to name a few, so that by the end of the book you feel that you have a really good understanding of them all. Personally I loved Brennus. He's arrogant, cocky, protective and passionate. And all of those body markings don't hurt with completing the picture either!!

Mark of the Princess is a book filled with a richness of words and magic!! It is a book filled with action, and some romance thrown in to balance it all out. But I have to make mention of that ending!! All I can say is PLEASE don't make me wait too long for the next instalment!! I'm desperate to find out what happens next!!

A little of everything...

If you're looking for a book with twists, turns, humor, romance, far-away lands, awesome characters who you come to care about, and a story that will sweep you away from reality, this book is DEFINITELY for you!! B.C. Morin does an awesome job in this fantastical story that will leave you wanting more! Luckily book 2 is being release SOON!! :)
