Very influential book about womens behaviors

Quite simply, I am impressed with the value and scope of this manuscript. It is the most influential piece of work written about the mind and behavior of women to appear in history (and yes that is a bold statement, read it you won't be disappointed). I say kudos for taking on a topic of such magnitude, and bringing to light the fact that women too have an evolutionary past. This book is loaded with insight about women's behaviors such as social aggression, friendship, love and marriage. And far from offering simple opinions, the ideas and explanations are backed up by a stagering mound of scientific data. Whether you are an academic or the average Jane, this book is bound to be a classic read for anyone interested in the unique behaviors of women.

An excellent introduction to algorithms

This is an interesting book. It's halfway between the typical science-book-for-non-scientists and a textbook. Unlike most science books for non-scientists, the author doesn't dumb down the material for the reader; he assumes you're intelligent and are willing to work a bit to understand what he says (including following mathematical arguments with actual equations). In fact, I only bought the book because the author was Cormen; I was familiar with his algorithms textbook (Introduction to Algorithms, better known as CLRS after the initials of the authors), which is absolutely authoritative, so I knew the material would be correct. (Having Julie Sussman, P.P.A., as the proofreader was also a big plus.) Unlike CLRS, this is not a textbook, but rather kind of a "pre-textbook". Its purpose is to whet your appetite, to teach you enough about the material so that you can decide if you want to study it more formally or not. If so, you can go straight to CLRS. If not, at least you'll have learned something. The people who will get the most out of this book are self-taught programmers who have never taken a course in algorithms but who nevertheless need to know this material. (And believe me, if you're a programmer, you _do_ need to know this material, whether you realize it or not.) Non-programmers may find that the book is too technical (especially the last few chapters, which get fairly heavily into topics like number theory and reductions of NP-complete problems). Despite this, I can think of no other book that provides such a clear introduction to the field of algorithms with so few prerequisites. Cormen's explanations are lucid and interesting throughout, and the topics are motivated by real-world applications which often don't find their way into textbook descriptions. Algorithms are described using a kind of pseudocode which is similar to that found in CLRS, but with a lot more written exposition. Overall, this is a great book if you're interested in the topic, or think you might be. Personally, I greatly prefer this kind of "pre-textbook" approach to the usual popular science book approach, and I hope that the example this book sets encourages more textbook writers to write such books.

I would be interested in algorithms more if I read this book first, not CLRS. The book's approach is easier to understand for beginner. It covers almost basic algorithms, helps you understand concepts and application. Then if you wan to go further, you can go with CLRS. After reading this book, the CLRS is easier to read.
But if you only want to know about algorithms, and don't to go deeper, this book is enough for you.

A comprehesive index of many beers

As a novice beer taster, I enjoy this book a lot. It has easy to understand language and beers are arranged according to country of origin and brewery and also through an alphabetic index. While no book could contain all beers, this volume does a nice job including both macro and microbrews. A friend once brought a case of various little known microbrews to a party, and "The Beer Tasters Log" had over half of them. For beers that are not listed, there is plenty of room to write your own "reviews" and keep them in order with the other entries. If you are an experienced beer taster or a novice like me, I'm sure you will enjoy this book. Incidentally, all of the beers I have tasted that are in the book, I have agreed with the authors review of them.

6000 LOUSY Reviews.

Obviously the author is over his head here--probably too many tastings for one person. Also, he has a unfortunate tendency towards over-rating domestics, and apparently little understanding of the most interesting, rare styles of beer (he gives Cantillon lambic something like a 20 out of 100 (less than some American "premium" lagers) because it's "too sour.") You might as well criticize Scotch as being "too peaty." Frankly, I haven't found any beer reviewer that I agree with more than half the time other than the great beer diety, Michael Jackson. The notes on the tasting process, however, are well laid out and the process explained in clear terms--I guess that's the best thing I can say...It's mostly the beer reviews themselves that are lame.

this book is a bible of beers, regardless of whether or not you agree with Robertson's opinions... he hits the great beers (Salvator, Piraat, Aventinus, EKU 28, Orval, etc.) and the horrible ones... for someone just starting to discover the world of beers to all the self-proclaimed "beer experts" out there, this really is a comprehensive, well organized catalog... i was starting to think i was running out of beers to taste, now i have a whole list of targets! enjoy... keep it on the basement bar...

Interesting look into the Roman world

I had to buy this book for my Roman Achievement class and I thoroughly enjoyed it- both the book AND the class! Much of what know of the lives of Romans was found by studying the many examples of how they wanted to be remembered- and that is primarily what this book offers. I like that it gives both English and Latin translations of tombstone inscriptions and that it is categorized by different social classes. This gave me a lot of insight into the differences between the lives of the aristocracy versus regular Roman families, slaves, freedman, or persons of the military. If you enjoy learning about the Roman era this book is a must have!

Great intro to Latin epigraphy

This book is good because it not only provides translations of a variety of interesting Latin inscriptions, it also teaches you a lot about the fascinating field of Latin epigraphy. It achieves this not merely by means of some nice introductory essays, but by printing, not simply a translation of each inscription, but also a relatively unedited Latin text followed by a more edited version of the Latin in which all the many abbreviations have been expanded into their full-word equivalents. This enables the reader to compare the translation with the text and learn those ubiquitous Latin abbreviations of which the Romans were so fond.

take it for what it is

I am in my fourth term of learning C++, and this book was theone required for my first two terms. I came into the program at myUniversity with no programming experience at all, and I was able to quickly understand basic concepts by having a great instructor and reading (and re-reading) this book. While not a great reference, I still consult it for basic concepts I might forget after a long break. If you view it for what it is -- an introductory book -- then I highly recommend it. I found the sections on looping and other conditionals very helpful that first term; functions were handled well, too. This is a book to read and re-read. If the class construct freaks you out, then read that chapter two or three times and you will get the basic idea. A lot of my classmates hated this book -- I never really got a good reason why. Unfortunately, the section on pointers is a little weird, although the info is accurate. I never liked the programming case studies at the end of the chapters either -- they didn't seem to flow well from the chapter material presented. Looking back at the book, especially as an intro book, I can't say enough how well the sections on classes were presented. For some reason, the writing style clicked with me, and the info provided a strong enough basis to further dive into the class construct -- which is an important topic and is the backbone of Abstract Data Types and Object Oriented Programming. Get another book, or a good instructor, for basic pointer concepts. Decent for linked lists. Minimal recursion. From what I've heard, C++ Primer Plus by Prata is a better book in some ways. That's next for me to get.

The best textbook on ANYTHING that I have ever used!

This textbook is the best I have ever used in any course, and I have a Ph.D. in psychology so I have had a LOT of courses. As a beginning programming student, I found this book to be clear, concise, entertaining, and very helpful. When you get tired of all of the new terms, the author "takes a break" and either introduces you to a famous figure in the history of computer science, or does a little "chatting" about tips -- stuff that it would be helpful for you to remember, but not stuff you'll be tested on. I have been in the beginner's course for 2 months now, taking a web-based course, and have learned an AWFUL LOT just from this book. You WILL LEARN introductory C++ from this book.
