Too close to his subject?

I finished this book thinking that Bill Milkowski was just way too close to his subject to do a true biography - at times, particularly towards the end, it becomes "my life with Jaco". However, that closeness does give Milkowski some insights into Jaco's personality that another author probably wouldn't have. Milkowski correctly recognizes that one of Jaco's greatest problems was the people surrounding him. One striking thing about the book was how many people close to Jaco blamed the "system" for failing Jaco (the author included), yet amazingly, how his family allowed a total stranger to convince a judge to release him under his own recognizance, 4 days before he received the fatal beating at the Midnight Bottle Club. However, unlike the treatment of John Belushi in Wired or Jim Morrison in No One Here Gets Out Alive, Milkowski avoids mythologyzing. Milkowski recognizes that when a supremely talented person destroyes himself, it's not heroic, it's tragic.

For some reason or another I have read a number of books along this same vein. Successful Musician, gifted, genius, thunderbolt from heaven, then poof, they self destruct and are gone long before they should be... yet are memorialized because of the ground they broke. Bix Beiderbeck, Jimi Hendrix, Chet Baker, Charlie Parker etc...
While this book covers the basic time line information, it doesn't really get to deep below the surface. Perhaps because there are too many people too fond of Jaco.
Should the journalist delve deeply or just run a shallow narrative concerning the life and times of Jaco Pastorius? Jaco had severe problems which led to his untimely death. While he was taken early in a altercation outside of a bar... he had already pushed the self destruct button and appeared to be beyond anyone's reach.
Sadly, no one came forward to really help this suffering soul. A few tried, and yes the responsibility ultimately rests with the individual, but Jaco was in need of some serious tough lov., Could it have worked? We'll never know.
Rest peacefully Jaco, you WERE loved and ARE missed.

A compulsive read.....................

.......Milkowski's book is an effort that should be applauded by all who pick up its pages. When I first looked at the intro to the book, I found it a fascinating look into the genius and tragedy of this landmark musician. Unlike others, who have stated that the book falls short in examining Jaco's psychological short comings and mental closet skeletons, I found the read not to be wanting in any area describing his life. Not only is it a book that is I feel is mandatory reading for any music lover.........it is a book that even the non musician can appreciate as well. The shock and saddness in which the stories unfold make the subject of Jaco as a performer simply a compelling story which the reader begins to empathize with Jaco but feels the same helplessness as those within the book while reading along to the inevitable conclusion. An easy read, and I've read that book at least 3 or 4 times and still pick it up to refer to some of the of profound statements and observation about not only Jaco's life........but the with human experience in all of us as well...Finally, this book (as a screenplay) would make an unbelievable movie ....Kudos to Bill...........RIP Jaco

Nothing new or innovative here

This was a text for my MEd and it was a rehash of ideas I heard or learned in the 1990's. There is still some truth in these strategies, but if you've taken a course in education, you've already heard them. It might be good as a refresher, but don't expect a "magic bullet".

When the Americans and British discover the Nazis’ plan they send an Allied task force into the North Atlantic to find and destroy Bekker’s U-boat and its deadly cargo. Their task becomes ever more urgent when agents learn that a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest levels of Britain’s MI-6. Suddenly the Allies are in a race to keep the U-boat’s cargo from possibly falling into Soviet hands.
Employing stealth and deception, Bekker and his crew escape a series of undersea engagements with Allied and Soviet forces. Fighting for survival, Bekker must decide whether to carry out Hitler’s orders and prolong the war or consign the Reich’s weapons of mass death to the North Atlantic deep. His decision could alter the course of history.

A Well-Researched Thriller!

Caution! "The Last U-boat" is so exciting that I read it too fast and had to read it a second time to really appreciate the story. Peter Sasgen combines meticulous research with pin-point accuracy to achieve a high velocity thriller. The German high command launches Operation Kondor but almost immediately the British and MI-6 are onto it. And...the Russians want to know what the British have found. Enter a beautiful and seductive spy. DIVE! DIVE! And enjoy it!

An Exciting Wartime Story of Suspense, Mystery, and Intrigue!

The Last U-Boat is another exciting thriller by author Peter Sasgen. While the novel is fictional, it is based on a non-fictional, Nazi secret operation between Germany and Japan that, had it been successful, could have possibly caused the death of millions and altered the balance of power in the world for decades.

In 1945, Germany and many of its officers knew the end was near. Hitler knew that time was running out and Germany might never be able to deliver the results of their secret biological research in weapons form against closing Allied and Russian forces.

While Germany needed gold to continue their war effort, the Japanese needed a weapon to stop the unrelenting American forces in the Pacific who were systematically attacking and destroying the Japanese Empire with a vengeance.

The exchange of 20 tons of Japanese gold bullion to Hitler for German biological weapons to destroy the Americans, represented an opportunity for both countries to extend the war, live another day, and possibly defeat the Allies.

To accomplish this exchange, the Germans planned to ship canisters of deadly anthrax and plague via a U-Boat to rendezvous with the Japanese and return with 20 tons of gold bullion to replenish Germany’s military might.

What happened once the German U-Boat departed on its mission in the Spring of 1945, until the secret of what happened to its cargo surfaced years later, remained a mystery for decades. Peter Sasgen has written an intriguing story of what could have happened on that dangerous journey.

With The Last U-Boat, Peter Sasgen has crafted another intriguing and well-written story of mystery and suspense. This thriller is set against wartime events involving well-research historical fiction, and has it all: a web of British MI-6, Russian NKGB, and American Intelligence, espionage, sex, violence and murder; all laid out in a race against time to stop the delivery of deadly biological weapons that could alter history.

The Last U-Boat has been a hit since it was first published in Germany in 2010. It has only recently became available as a Kindle Edition in the USA, and having read several other books by Peter Sasgen, I was looking forward to reading this one.

The thing that I liked about The Last U-Boat is that once I started reading, it was fast and hard to put down; for me, that is a page turner as one might say; I read it almost non-stop in two days while traveling over the holidays.

What I especially liked about The Last U-Boat is that while the story is about how and if the German U-Boat Captain will complete his mission for the Fuhrer, and who will win the race between Allied and Russian forces to find the U-Boat and secure its secret cargo, there is a lot more.

For me, it was the characters involved and their lives, decisions, dangers, and hardships faced during this period nearing the end of the war, that I found especially thought-provoking. How far should one go in risking their life for their country and perhaps a lost cause? How does one survive such circumstances beyond their control? Will there be a life after the war? Will they ever see their family and loved ones again? What price is too much? Is there a way out?

Thinking about the dangerous, hopeless and uncontrollable situation in which characters faced at this time, one has to feel a certain sympathy for their plight, and ask themselves, “What would I have done under these dangerous circumstances?”

If you like drama, this book has it all. Unexpected changes in the plot keep the reader constantly on edge, and asking for more. Captivating intrigue between spies, with gripping and realistic undersea action make this book a winner. It is hard to put a story like this down each day, so don't start it if you have to get up early the next morning.

Soup and Me

I like the book I'm reading because it is kind of a comady. It is about two friends who have grown up together. Theres a girl in the book that always picks on them and they try to get back at her. They play tricks on her. Then Soup starts liking a girl and Rob doesn't like that with some times they fight. In one part of the book witch I thought was funny. They try to save money to buy some gum so Soup gives Rob a hair cut. With doesn't turn out to well. But I realy like this book.
The boys realy have some funny things happen to them. They decide to take a swim in April and of course the water is freezing. A girl comes and takes there clothes and throughs them into the pond.So they have to run through the town naked. They come to a church and they find some clothes but they are all girl clothes. They build this car from stuff they found at the dump. They have all different tips of tires. They take it for a test drive and they crash into the ditch. Rob's mom gives him a Quarter for a hair cut. But the wont to get some bubble gum. So Soup gives Rob a hair cut.

Peck's Soup series puts Harry Potter and anyone who reads them to shame, shame on you! The Soups are smart, funny and relevant to anyone who enjoys a quick read.
It's a shame Soup & Me and the other Soups are out of print. These books will remind you of Huck Finn; they're about clever, rural boys with cool names and the writing's just as good, but funnier.
I recommend the Soups to everybody, including Rosie O'Donnell and my nay-saying girlfriend. Most of all, I wish all pre-teen boys could read the Soups -- to actually read something that can be considered fine writing, and to learn how to construct a corn cob pipe in a Vermont corn field.

Loved it as a kid, love it now as an adult

I loved the Soup books when I was a kid. They are funny, easy to read and great to listen to. I found a used paperback last year and reread it. Sometimes books don't really hold up as I look at them again with older eyes, but this one sure does!

why on earth is this no longer in print?!
