The Supply Management Handbook is one of those references you just have to have. The book's primary focus is Supply Management; the strategic methods used to select suppliers, evaluate suppliers, and make your supply network a competitive advantage. It also covers Logistics, Finance and future supply strategies. Bottom line, it's a comprehensive look at all the important factors of Supply Chain Management. I've worked in Supply Chain for 10 years and I've used this book to teach undergraduate and graduate level Supply Chain Management classes.

The Kindle version is ok. It provides all the content needed but it does not provide page numbers or the option to zoom in or out to make it and easier read. Not having page numbers makes it difficult to follow along in a classroom setting.

just like when you spend money you don't have

Throwing money at a problem rarely fixes it and so too does throwing time at a project; eventually it will catch up to you as you build deficits in other important areas of your life, just like when you spend money you don't have. This book encourages you to accept that your time is finite and that you should budget and invest it properly on the most important and impactful things in your life. Easier said than done, but this book teaches you how to not only identify what is important, but also on how to identify (and fix) those habits and ways of thinking that compromise our decisions on how we should be spending our time.

That being said, there are several specific things about this book that I like a lot:
- It is a small and easy read; gets right to the point and easy to revisit later.
- It is actionable and practical. You can take this book and use it without guesswork; it says what you need to do in plain English.
- It holistically addresses the problem from your reactions to stress to your daily routines and actions. Using this book you will realize that you are not lazy, stupid or unproductive (in my case) but rather you are just allocating your time poorly.
- Lastly, it is grounded in reality and it paces you appropriately; you never feel overwhelmed by what you have to do.

"Why Are You Awake?" Alarm is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Even if you got only one thing out of Elizabeth Grace Saunders’s How to Invest Your Time Like Money, her idea of a Why Are You Awake? alarm makes the 75-page ebook well worth the purchase.

But there’s a lot more sage advice packed into the highly readable offering by HBR Press.

Saunders’s basic premise is a simple but compelling one: “You need to learn the skills to invest your time like money.” She elaborates:

"When you invest your time as if it were money, you look at the reality of how much time you have available and the truth of activities’ time cost. You then make decisions that allow you to get out of time debt. And with this balanced budget in hand, you can then set up the structure to consistently invest your time in what’s most important."

Five chapters and an inspiring epilogue help the reader to consider how to best use her or his time in the service of identified values and priorities:

1. Take Control of Your Time and Your Life
2. Identify Your Time Debt
3. Create a Base Schedule
4. Set Up Automatic Time Investment
5. Maximize Your Time ROI
Epilogue: Remember What You’re Working For

I’ve read enough time management books to nearly expect the kind of introductory statement in the first chapter: “Most time management methodologies fail….” However, Saunders really does offer a unique angle on time management, writing, “Time, like money, must be invested to work for you now and support your ideal future.” This is what sets Saunders’s book apart from other task management writing. She boldly begins: “What will need to change is you.”

She helps the reader address psychological “barriers to success,” such as accepting the role of victim of other people’s expectations, playing the rescuer (and therefore taking on other people’s tasks), or even somehow thinking “a sane and sustainable schedule with (gasp!) free time” is an undeserved luxury.

I can imagine a hurried executive reading, “Accept the past and forgive yourself” and balking at an emotions-based approach, but I think Saunders is right on the money. We can’t fix how we manage our time without taking a careful, hard look at what’s behind our time-spending (and time-wasting habits).

So only after a full chapter devoted to examining the ways we undermine our effectiveness–and suggesting practical ways to combat this–does Saunders write:

"Now you’re mentally and emotionally primed to authentically evaluate your time investment. So, it’s time to take a serious look at whether you’re in time debt and, if so, how you can move toward a balanced budget."

For the rest of the book, Saunders serves as the temporal equivalent of a financial advisor. What turned me on to the book in the first place is an excerpt HBR posted, where Saunders suggests a “formula to stop you from overcommitting your time.”

Chapters 2 through 5 then walk the reader through setting both a daily and weekly “time budget” and schedule. Saunders suggests how to help the actual match the envisioned. (One juicy nugget, via Arianna Huffington: “You can complete a project by dropping it.”) There is a difference, Saunders notes, between, “Do I have to do this?” and, “Do I have to do this now?”

Even as the author deftly guides the reader through the nuts and bolts of scheduling, she continues to keep an eye on some of the deep-down causes that prevent us from spending time well:

"[Y]ou need to uncover what’s at the bottom of your emotional resistance so that you can let go of it and make time investment decisions that serve your greatest and highest good."

Each chapter ends with a really helpful summary checklist, making it easy to translate ideas into actionable progress.

One thing that seems to be missing in this book is more specific advice on how to tally how much time various tasks will take. After all, part of the issue is that we often underestimate how long it will take to complete a task. Saunders does give advice here (a section called, “Improve Your Estimation of Time Costs”), though it is largely of the just estimate via trial-and-error variety.

That said, there may simply not be much else to do but to follow her sound advice to track one’s time to be able to “look back at the totals for similar past projects for data on realistic estimates.”

Even in book form Saunders is interpersonally and psychologically sensitive and insightful. And she so often calls the reader back–in an inspiring way–to the big picture:

"In the end, getting the best return on your investment is not about whether you got the most tasks done but about whether you put time and effort into what’s most important to you."

By all means, go download this book right now. Schedule five 20-minute blocks to read it (this is what I did, and it worked great). And then schedule some more time to sit down with your calendar and put into practice all that Saunders recommends.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed...take back control!

I think everyone feels overcommitted at times. Too many internal and external expectations for their energy, and just not enough hours in the day to service themselves and others. Elizabeth's book is a great guide for stepping back and determining what's actually important, and then building a time management strategy that aligns with those core values.

My big takeaways were:

You have to commit - You can try every "system" in the world (trust me I have), but none of them will work if you don't have the discipline to stick with them.
Find what fits for you - there is no "one way" you have to take the time to observe and understand yourself, only then can you determine the best practices that work for YOU
Be realistic - I often think I can pack more in than possible. I love how the author forces you to step back and take an objective look at how much time you actually have, and then use that as a baseline for setting expectations for yourself.
Don't try to be perfect, just try to get better - If perfection doesn't exist in nature, then it's definitely not something you or I can achieve. Don't focus on being perfect, just try to be better than the person you were the day before (applies to life as well as time)

What makes the author's book so impactful is that it includes both the theory and the practice. Instead of giving a "one size fits all" system, she talks about the values you should emphasize when thinking about time management. Actually giving you the tools to create your own system. But instead of leaving you to figure out for yourself she supplies several examples of actual implementation (Theory + Practice).

Certainly a book I'll go back to as I continue to refine my own time management skills.

Fiction but true

This brilliant and compassionate book made me laugh cry love Margot love Anne again seeing her from a different light and made me feel grief at all the loss.
The book sheds lught into the darkness and hell yet is uplifting without excessively gentling down the unimaginable or omforting where comfort is inappropriate.
The author uses fiction to share truth.
It should be shared by book clubs and be a bestseller and be read as widely as possible

I have only read the excerpts of book shown above, but I have done extensive research on Anne Frank and actually met or spoke to all survivors (Hannah, Jacque and Hello). Right off the bat, the author does not use the correct name of Helmut "Hello" Silberberg. Perhaps it was the author's intention to not use real names, but then why use a name so close to the real one? I am forwarding this book title to him and the others to see if they were contacted or even know of this publication. Seems a shame to go to the trouble of writing a book based on "fact" and not taking advantage of people who actually knew Margot, including an Anne Frank expert who assisted me in the writing of my award-winning play GOODBYE MEMORIES. Laureen Nusbaum was a close friend of Margot and lived in the same building as the Franks.

The book itself is impressive with gorgeous endpapers, 51 photographic plates and 41 illustrations throughout the text. It will make a terrific holiday gift. Sykes is a photographer and writer who clearly loves Hockney's work, this is more a celebration of the artist and not a critical work. And I loved it. Sykes was granted extensive interviews with Hockney, his family and those who know him, that make this a most entertaining and insightful read. For readers like me who knew Hockney through is work and nothing else, we get the private and the public man. Equally as interesting as learning about the man is learning about his process, working on a given day until exhausted (like many of us), learning how technology can expand his creativity.

For those like me who didn't read volume one here is a brief synopsis: David Hockney: The Biography, 1937-1975 (April 17, 2012): Drawing on exclusive and unprecedented access to David Hockney's extensive archives, notebooks, and paintings, interviews with family, friends, and on Hockney himself, Christopher Simon Sykes provides a colorful and intimate portrait of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Born in 1937, David Hockney grew up in a northern English town during the days of postwar austerity. By the time he was ten years old he knew he wanted to be an artist, and after leaving school he went on to study at Bradford Art College and later at the Royal College of Art in London. Bursting onto the scene at the Young Contemporaries exhibition, Hockney was quickly heralded as the golden boy of postwar British art and a leading proponent of pop art. It was during the swinging 60s in London that he befriended many of the seminal cultural figures of the generation and throughout these years Hockney's career grew. Always absorbed in his work, he drew, painted and etched for long hours each day, but it was a scholarship that led him to California, where he painted his iconic series of swimming pools. Since then, the most prestigious galleries across the world have devoted countless shows to his extraordinary work. In the seventies he expanded his range of projects, including set and costume design for operas and experiments with photography, lithography, and even photocopying. Most recently he has been at the forefront the art world's digital revolution, producing incredible sketches on his iPhone and iPad, and it is this progressive thinking which has highlighted his genius, vigor and versatility as an artist approaching his 75th birthday. In this, the first volume of Hockney's biography, detailing his life and work from 1937 - 1975, Sykes explores the fascinating world of the beloved and controversial artist whose career has spanned and epitomized the art movements of the last five decades.

Like the first volume

This is the second part of the Sykes bio of Hockney. Like the first volume, this book is filled with interviews with Hockney's friends, lovers, family and art-world associates. Th author's informed opinions and insights greatly enrich this bio. I suggest any interested reader start with the first volume. Don't let the length (roughly 750 pages in two volumes) put you off. It is all entertaining and interesting, well-illustrated as well.

Good book for refreshing your knowledge

The best book of nuclear reactor engineering for people looking for an overview of the important aspects. I used it for reviewing my PhD qualifying exam because I wanted to have a summary the shielding/ materials/ radiation interaction and reactor kinetics features of LWRs as well as fast reactors. It fitted my needs.
Maybe not enough figures and tables but the text is very clear.
