Spending a summer living on the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass., Frame recounts his experiences and education in the ways of being homeless, in this, his debut effort. 'Divinity John,' as he comes to be called, offers an account more personal than academic, its anthropology and theology distinguished by a warmth missing in other books on the same topic. This is not a systematic treatment of strategies for alleviating homelessness. Instead, it is a narrative with firsthand accounts from the author and some of the homeless people he befriends, meant to humanize the marginalized 'other' and introduce the reader to how homeless people live. Mirroring the author's own perspective shift, the book leads the reader to recognize the struggles of homeless people, as well as their humanity, community, and their distinct desire for forming relationships. The book is touching, and well worth the read, if only to provide a more informed view of a group that is frequently misunderstood. -- (Publishers Weekly)
About the Author
John Frame holds master’s degrees from Harvard Divinity School, Anderson University, and Eastern Michigan University. He has worked in local government and has taught courses at several colleges. He enjoys spending time with his wife, whom he met at a souvenir shop in Istanbul, Turkey.

Perspective on homelessness

Homeless at Harvard is a story about John Frame and the friends he made while living one summer with the homeless community in Harvard Square. The author himself was not homeless and so did not really experience what it was like to be homeless. He could leave at any time - his new friends could not. Frame, a Harvard student, chose to live within the community in order to gain a better understanding, to build relational bridges, and to share his experience with others (yes, he did it to write a book).
Frame follows a handful of homeless people closely. It's a story but it is not really chronological. Frame jumps back and forth, giving snapshots of life on the street. His stories are touching, poignant, and personal. You really get to "know" his friends, particularly Neal. Like a story, the book has some conflict and some suspense, but what it doesn't have is a tidy ending. While some people seem to end with success - finding a home - others end with a lot of open questions. It's what actually happened, of course, but it also feels like a broader metaphor for homelessness.
One of the more interesting parts of this book is its "in their own words" chapters where Frame's friends share their own stories. Each has a unique perspective on life and theology. Many of the homeless people Frame meets are Christian and some are militant atheist. The book presents a whole range of religious experience. Frame himself is a Christian and shares his faith with the homeless he interacts with. He doesn't really develop theological insights in the book but he (and his homeless friends) do regularly point back to the cross, both as a symbol for salvation and for friendship across boundaries.
The book provides a unique perspective on homelessness, though it is certainly not exhaustive. Frame certainly learned a lot in those ten weeks but the sample size is still small. I would be interested to hear the story of someone who lived for a much longer time on the streets. Of course, the reader does get that through Frame's conversations and the friendships he built in his time in Harvard Square.
If you're interested in the problem of homelessness I recommend this book. It's not a how-to manual for solving the problem but does give a more nuanced look at the face of homelessness. You get to know a diverse group of people who have a diverse set of struggles. I confess: it can be easy to lump all homeless people together or to make broad generalizations. This book is a good antidote to that kind of thinking.
I wanted more answers out of this book - what to give, how to help without hurting - but I didn't really get that. I think that was by design. Frame understands that the problems are complex and so are the needs. Homelessness doesn't have a one-size-fits solution. The answer isn't simple because people aren't simple. Frame wants us to understand that giving a handout is really just a first step in getting to know the homeless on a personal level.

A Must Read!!!

Homeless at Harvard is the story of a student who decides to spend his summer on the streets of Harvard Square learning about homelessness. Through the story of him and a few of his closest homeless friends, we see what life is really like in the homeless world, and it's not what I expected at all! By the end of the book, though John does not think he did much for the homeless, I believe he did more than he knows. He opened up a world and made it real and relatable for those of us who will never experience what it is like to be without a home.
This book changed forever the way I view the homeless. And it also showed me that just because I don't have money to give to the homeless, doesn't mean I don't have anything to offer them. Sometimes the best thing we can give another soul is what he or she is not asking for--a relationship. Instead of pretending we don't see people, especially those who are not like us, we can smile, say hello, offer a listening ear. So many times, I would be in the car when a homeless man or woman walked by. Knowing I had no money to give to them, I would look away when they came near (I'm not proud of it). But, after reading this book, when we passed by a man asking for change, I smiled at him and waved. It wasn't much, but is was a recognition that he mattered.
I recommend this book to everyone. It will open your eyes to a whole new way of relating, not just to the homeless, but to everyone around you.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be homeless? You can learn about it in John Christopher Frame's recent book, Homeless at Harvard, published by Zondervan.
"If you're going to be homeless anywhere, Harvard Square is probably the best place to be," says Chubby John, one of the people the author meets while living on the street at Harvard.
Chubby John adds, ". . .there are services for the homeless in Cambridge and there's no problem raising money. If you're hungry, you just tell somebody walking down the street and somebody's going to buy you a sandwich or a pizza."
Frame, the author of the book, wanted to learn about homelessness from the inside out. While a divinity school student at Harvard, one of his professors suggested translating life experiences into actions in order to serve a greater purpose. So Frame decided to build relationships and share experiences with those who lived on the streets and he chose Harvard Yard as the place to spend ten weeks in the summer.
In his book, Frame introduces us to Neal, Dane, Chubby John, George and others who share the community of the homeless at Harvard.
Many of the chapters are written from the view point of people who live on the streets and are, indeed, homeless.
"On the streets there's more freedom and less rules," says George.
Neal, who is dying of a terminal disease, says he wanted to become an actor but "because of my health I always feel like `What's the use of doing anything because I'm going to die anyway?"
Hank describes the danger of hanging out at "the pit" while other homeless people describe "the Coop" and the "Camp," places familiar to them in their "neighborhood" on the streets.
I found this book a fascinating first-person account of another lifestyle and the lessons learned by the author who spent a summer as a homeless person in Harvard Yard.
