About the Author

James Ellroy was born in Los Angeles in 1948. His L.A. quartet -- The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential and White Jazz -- were international bestsellers. American Tabloid was Time's Novel of the Year in 1995; his memoir My Dark Places was Time's Best Book and a New York Times Notable book for 1996. His novel The Cold Six Thousand was a New York Times Notable Book and Los Angeles Times Best Book for 2001. He lives on the coast of California.

Ellroy's First Kicks Ass

Getting into Ellroy? Why not start at the beginning? Watch his style develop. I think folks get disappointed when they read this and other earlier works after they read "the hits" like "L.A. Confidential" and "American Tabloid." But hey, had he come out of the gates with "American Tabloid" he'd probably be done by now. Fortunately for us, Ellroy started off slow. "Brown's Requiem" is a much more straightforward hard-boiled novel. But just like his later work, it rocks, it rolls, it leaves you on the side of the road hitchiking back to town. As I read this book, I couldn't help thinking of it as an updated "The Big Sleep." It has that sad, broken, 3 am undertone to it. If you dig that tough, L.A. stuff, you'll dig this. Note: The story does involve caddies and golf (which I know nothing about) but it doesn't matter. The golf element is merely a backdrop. The book is also about murder, arson and Mexican porn and, regardless of what my friends will tell you, I know nothing about these subjects either and still enjoyed the Hell out this book. Put it this way: You won't be reading any excerpts from "Brown's Requiem" in "Chicken Soup for the Golfer's Soul."

solid crime novel but not his best

This was Ellroy's first published novel. It's a good, solid crime novel. It's mostly in the tradition of his predecessors like Chandler and Hammett, but some of his future trademarks are there, like the seedy anti-hero who eventually discovers and follows his own moral imperative. It's a bit bumpy in spots, and sometimes the plot falls into place a bit too neatly, but it's a good read. It's not nearly as amazing as the L.A. Quartet or American Tabloid, all brilliant books for which he has become justifiably famous. I read this after reading those (as well as My Dark Places and Crime Wave). Had I read this first, I would have been shocked by his later work. Maybe The Black Dahlia is a better place to start for the Ellroy novice.. This one seems almost quaint in comparison.

Great P.I. Fiction

I am not a James Ellroy fan. In fact, "Brown's Requiem" is the only novel of his that I have read, because it is the only one of his books I've found that is a straight private detective story. And as an example of the that genre, this books stands among the best. Ellroy's hero, Fritz Brown, is everything a good P.I. should be; world weary, cynical, alcoholic and carrying heavy baggage from his past. He also has plenty of good character eccentricities, like a fascination for classical music. He is also prone to make that classic P.I. mistake, to fall in love with a woman he knows he probably shouldn't fall in love with.
All of this said the book takes some unexpected twists and turns. Brown ends up investigating his own client, his romantic interest turns out to have a VERY complicated past and his case turns out to be far more elaboarate than it first appears. All of this leads to a violent and satisfying climax, like any good P.I. novel should. Fans of P.I. masters such Andrew Vachss, George Pellecanos and yes, Raymond Chandler, out to be right at home with Fritz Brown.

Needs an Editor..

So the book is written (apparently) solely by Stan Baronett and while it is an admirable feat for anyone to write a textbook on their own it leaves room for plenty of errors. As the previous reviewer posted, many of that the examples given incorrect answers and this make it very frustrating when studying for a test. When you spend 80+ dollars on a paperback textbook you expect a high standard to be met and while it does an amazing job describing the information (better than my prof.) It lacks much in providing good examples. (its probably harder than it looks, honestly). Anyways, I'd still recommend the book, good clear info, but be warned about the examples. I just hope the next edition has an editor. 2.5-3.0 stars

I bought this book for one of my college classes. It's a great book which clearly goes in depth about logic and how to analyze different arguments. It's definitely a dry read and I wouldn't suggest just buying this book on a whim because it can be confusing to understand at points. But overall, I'm pleased with the purchase.

Introducing the key themes of 20th-century German history, this survey traces the course of social, cultural, and political tensions in Germany since 1918. Starting with the self-destructive Weimar Republic, author Mary Fulbrook guides readers through the extremes of genocide and military aggression in the Nazi era; the extraordinary political experiment of dividing the nation during the Cold War; the collapse of communist East Germany; and unification with capitalist democratic West Germany in 1990. A History of Germany, 1918-2014 also covers events since the end of the Cold War, examining the changing ways in which Germany remains divided even today. Treating West and East German history in equal depth, the author provides a useful framework for exploring continuities and changes in modern Germany.  

In this fourth edition, the author has thoroughly updated the text with particular focus on developments since unification in 1990. She includes discussion of Germany’s pivotal role in the Euro crisis, the importance of the 2013 elections, and a review of Angela Merkel’s Chancellorship.  The book concludes with reflections on Germany’s tumultuous history over the century since the First World War. 

About the Author

Mary Fulbrook is Dean of the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences at University College London (UCL). She was founding Joint Editor of German History, and has served as Chair of the German History Society as well as Chair of the Modern History Section of the British Academy. Her books include Anatomy of a Dictatorship: Inside the GDR, 1949–1989 (1995), German National Identity After the Holocaust (1999), Interpretations of the Two Germanies, 1945–1990 (Second Edition, 2000), Historical Theory (2002), A Concise History of Germany (Second Edition, 2004), The People’s State: East German Society from Hitler to Honecker (2005), Dissonant Lives: Generations and Violence through the German Dictatorships (2011), and the Fraenkel Prize winning A Small Town near Auschwitz: Ordinary Nazis and the Holocaust (2012).

Taking as hisprinciple, "the real physics of software is the physics of people", hefocuses now on building communities through "Social Architecture",writing, and helping others use ZeroMQ profitably.

For two years he was president of the FFII, a large NGO fightingsoftware patents. He was CEO of Wikidot, founder of the EuropeanPatent Conference, and founder of the Digital Standards Organization.

Pieter speaks English, French, Dutch, and bits and pieces of a dozenother languages. He plays with a West African drum group in Brusselsand is becoming a licensed NRA pistol instructor in Texas. Pieterlives with his beautiful wife and three lovely children in Brussels,Belgium and travels extensively.

It's available online, but if you use it, you want the book

ZeroMQ is great technology: easy to use, and versatile in its application. As the author of the book (and originator of the technology) points out, it will change the way you think about socket programming.
The only downside is, ZMQ is only a transport layer. It doesn't come shrink-wrapped with any serialization protocol. Lots of folks will want to use a serialization protocol. I may need one eventually, though I do not right now. Some folks might like a few use cases with protocol buffers or XDR. I more or less agree with the author's choice to stick with the subject on the title of the book (and I very much agree with his design choice to not include yet another one of these things with his tool), but folks should be aware of this, and be ready to do a little more work on that piece if you need it.

Excellent book on a great Networking API

Excellent book on a great Networking API. I've been working with ZMQ in C++ and Python and have had great success implementing interthread, interprocess, and TCP communications on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 and 14.04. I've been using C++11 and found zmq a great match for my programming needs. I love that you can open up either end of the socket and still communicate in the correct direction. Takes all of the hassles of raw socket programming out to get the real work done like exchanging 1000s of messages per second and doing a little distributed computing. Fun stuff for sure. The book is written in a style that takes you from simple examples to get you started to more complex examples as you go. The examples are all in C but you can download many examples in other languages. The C++ examples still look like C but you can download the C++ zmq wrapper and use a little more pure C++ implementation. Doing zmq in python is even easier!!! I have easily integrated C++ to Python communications with ease.

Enterprise architecture disguised as a product guide

Make no doubt about it. The ZeroMQ book will teach you plenty about writing C code in order to use the ZeroMQ library. You'll learn about every socket type offered, every combination that can be used to create pipelining, request-reply, and pub-sub components for your systems. But what you'll also find is a wealth of knowledge about distributed computing, reliable messaging, protocol design, and sage advise for rapid development. I've had the book for over 2 weeks and continue to devour it, page by page, translating the code examples into javascript for use in my own node.js applications. Not that the github site doesn't already have working examples of the book's code in every language from Ada to Tcl, including Clojure, Erlang, Lua, Haskell, Python, Ruby, and Scala, to name a few. In addition, I find the writer's style to be very enjoyable with wit and opinion aplenty. Buy this book and treasure it! I do.
