An interesting mix for mixed audiences

This can't be an impartial review, since the author is a friend of mine. Instead it's meant to give those interested in Benin a sense of what the book offers. It reminds me of the contributions of an author like the Edo writer Aisien, who has published extremely useful accounts of Edo scarification, the pilgrimage route, etc. Aisien is well-educated, but trained neither as a historian nor an anthropologist. The absence of an academic perspective or theoretical approach to his work cannot deny the usefulness of the information he has recorded. For those outside Nigeria, Aisien provides invaluable data; for those inside, he draws together material that may be familiar to some but has never seen print. Aisien is one of those invaluable sources--an intelligent "local historian."

Likewise, Peavy--trained as a lawyer with a background in anthropology--is not an academic author but, despite being an American, is, in a sense, also a "local historian." He serves several audiences, each with differing interests. These audiences will likely value very different sections of the book, due to the relative availability or unavailability of the information they consider relevant.

For an Edo audience, Peavy provides a great service. The second half of his book looks at the medicinal highlights of the reigns of Benin's rulers, one by one. These are extracted and compiled primarily from various local sources, many of which are out of print and unavailable in Nigeria and the U.S. By concentrating on the medicinal aspects of each reign, Peavy provides an interesting perspective that underlines the importance of medicine's foundational characteristics.

For the non-Nigerian reader with an interest in traditional African religion, the book's first section contains a handy compendium of Edo deities and religious practices, not easily accessible elsewhere in one source.

For the scholarly reader, some of this material is familiar, but it contains nuggets that have not seen publication before. Peavy has studied aspects of traditional Edo divination and medicine for over fourteen years, first among the Esan and then within Benin City. Although the greedy scholar may be disappointed he doesn't expound even further regarding his personal experiences (an upcoming book is underway), the insights offered by descriptions of methods referred to in texts but never elaborated upon are priceless. While ominigbon and the adopted (and adapted) Yoruba Ifa divination methods are referred to by Benin scholars, they are not generally known. Other Benin divinatory practices have never received more than the mention of a name--Peavy is the first author I know of to discuss some of the particulars of ewawa and eziza divination (including photographs of the equipment); his data and insights in this regard are invaluable.

Kings, Magic & Medicine is an excellent book to read. It gave me look into Traditional Edo history and some of the practices the native doctors use. The book gives a detailed description of the different systems of divination, Deities,Kings,Chieftaincy and native doctor positions. The book was so interesting that I want to study more on the practices of Traditional Edo medicine, history and how that kingdom correlates to the rest of Nigerian history. This book is really a great book to have in one's collection.

About the Author
Dr. Ying Bai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU). Before joining JCSU, Dr. Bai worked as a senior software engineer in the field of automatic control and testing equipment in Silicon Valley, California, and Columbus, Ohio. He has a great deal of experience in robotics control, robot calibrations, and related software programming, as well as accurate measurements in industrial and academic fields. Dr. Bai is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ACM. In recent years, he has published six books in multi-language interface programming, serial port programming, electronics, fuzzy logic technology, and database programming with Visual Basic.NET.

Author has provided lot of knowledge in this book. The other problem is that this book is based on prior to the c# 4.5, which are c# 4.0 and 3.5 and so on. so the book is missing present features you can get from c# 4.5 and c# 5.0. other than that its a good professional book.

Great coverage

The book is based on a newer version of software development tool from Microsoft: Visual C#.NET 2008 environment. I understand that Microsoft has had a 2010 release after the book was published. However, the version that the book is based on is recent enough.
After over a decade of rapid development on programming tools that use different languages and follow different design philosophies, the C#.NET is one of the recent pushes from Microsoft. Other tools used in the book are also relatively recent versions, such as Microsoft Access 2007, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 and Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 2. This could be attractive to the ones who usually want to get the newer products and up-to-date information. The wizard tools are especially powerful in this C#.NET release. The author provides a good coverage on that.

A book finally leaves his mind to probe his life

This book is very well researched and presents a very accurate account of his life from begining to end. It is an escape from the many books on his theory's and his mind. This book focuses on his life, and what made him a wonderful human. It will bring Einstein into your life as a great person entirely apart from his scientific discoveries. However, please be aware the book does not present his theories or studies in detail. But that wasn't the author's intentions, and he did exactly what he set out to do and did it beautifully.

Happy Birthday, Albert Einstein

People who know nothing about Einstein's ideas, nonetheless have ideas about Einstein -- his life, habits, subjects he flunked, and so on. The principal benefit of Mr. Brian's text is its ability to convey a dispassionate objective rendering of Einstein, organized almost as a yearly diary, with each chapter covering a set number of years in the life of this great scientist. It is, as other revewers have noted, a remarkably readable book. One doesn't look here, however, for the scientific contribution -- this is, as the title says, A Life. Einstein's life, though, for all his tendency and capacity for concentrating like a laser on whatever problem he worked, was very much a social life. He made friends quickly, surrounded himself with students quite often, had more than his share of challenges with the many women in his life, and was deeply affected by the wave of anti-semitism that characterized so much of his most productive years. Portrayed in these pages, in other words, is a profoundly human Einstein. In many respects, quite the ordinary man with extrordinary intellectual capacities. Nominated 8 times in 11 years for the Nobel Prize, he was denied the prize, partly because of the anti-semitism of one of the Committee's members, and partly because, well, the Committee was not sure they understood what he was saying. That itself, is an indication of his vision. So, March 14, the year his birth -- Happy Birthday Albert!

In-Depth Biography with Brilliant Range of Content.

A few years ago my Father gifted me a Barnes and Noble gift card for my birthday, and this is one of the books I purchased. There has always been something very endearing to me about Einstein, aside from his intellectualism and contribution to the world. After reading some very brief articles about certain aspects of his personal life, I took a keen interest in learning more about the man behind the fantastically giant brain.

Einstein: A Life is an in-depth biography touching on many subjects: from early childhood and familial dynamics, to the social and political issues of the time (and further their impact on Einstein's location, and education), influences and role models, antagonists, love interests (of which there seemed many), personal traits and characteristics (quite a quirky man, he was), professional/career-related feats and failures, interpersonal relationships (incredibly interesting to learn of his interactions with many other well-known individuals ranging from entertainers to high-profile politicians and educators), and many, many more.

I absolutely loved reading some of the very funny stories (one describing how, in the absence of a scarf, decided to yank the runner off of the couch to don during his outing in the cold weather, ha), but was also surprised to learn of some of the darker content (his relationship with Mileva, for instance).

This man had such a beautiful mind; beyond the typical things most people are aware of. His passion to prevent nuclear war, and his sense of responsibility to personally urge against it. His ability to see people as people regardless of their origins, shape, color, disability-and the contradiction therein of being very tight-lipped regarding his affections with those in frequent direct contact.

The entire book introduces so many facets of him-it is a must-read. My only regret is the dire need to know his final words!!!

About the Author
Camillo Boito (1836-1914) became Professor of Architecture at the Accademia delle Belle Arti while only 19 before moving to Milan to be Professor of Architecture at the Accademia di Brera. Most of his work as an architect was in restoring major buildings to their former glory. He wrote only 17 novelle which were published in periodicals but later published in two volumes in 1876 and 1883. The Dedalus collection Senso (and other stories) is a selection from these two volumes. Boito's brother, Arrigo was a notable poet and Verdi's librettist for Otello and Falstaff.

Christine Donougher was born in England in 1954. She read English and French at Cambridge and after a career in publishing is now a freelance translator and editor. Her translation of The Book of Nights won the 1992 Scott Moncrieff Translation Prize. Her translations from French for Dedalus are: 7 novels by Sylvie Germain, The Book of Nights, Night of Amber, Days of Anger,The Book of Tobias, Invitation to a Journey, The Song of False Lovers and Magnus, Enigma by Rezvani, The Experience of the Night by Marcel Bealu, Le Calvaire by Octave Mirbeau, Tales from the Saragossa Manuscript by Jan Potocki,The Land of Darkness by Daniel Arsand and Paris Noir by Jacques Yonnet. Unattractive pictures. Only one page (small amount of text) about strategies for addressing dyslexia. Includes the fact that "a generation ago" people with LD were called "stupid." Don't see any value in this book.

As a school counselor, I have been looking for a book that is accessible to my students that are struggling with visual disabilities and dyslexia. This book speaks right to the student. It also has a strong message that students with learning differences are smart and capable, and, if they get the right help, can achieve anything.

A great read for all Reagan aficionados

Anne Edwards depicts Ronald Reagan and his early years as well as any author whom I have read, including Ronald Reagan, himself. In his two autobiographies, "Where's the Rest of Me" and "An American Life," Reagan gave us a glimpse of his early years and of Reagan, himself, as he saw things and as he saw himself. Thanks to Ms. Edwards' in-depth research and extensive interviews, we now get to see Ronald Reagan and his life and times through the eyes of those who grew up with him, watched him grow up, went to school with him, worked with him, or simply knew him during his formative years.

I was particularly taken with the thoroughness of Chapters 1-13, which covered the growing-up and coming-of-age years. Where else could one learn that Ronald Reagan first applied for a library card (or number) at the age of ten, on December 20, 1921, that he was given number #3695, that he averaged two books a week, that they were mostly adventures, and that he usually checked them out on weekends? Or, that his mother, Nelle, was thought my many in Dixon to be a faith healer? Or that the log on which he notched his 77 "saves" as a lifeguard at Lowell Park was washed away years later when the Rock River flooded.

These early chapters were presented in a delightfully even-handed manner. But, beginning with Chapter 14 the author seemed to change her tenor. Much to my dismay, she appeared to abandon her previous objectivity and become a critic of both the Senate Select Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC), throwing in her own pejoratives, and of Reagan's motion pictures and career in general. Even so, however, she provides the most detailed and complete explanation of this period of Reagan's life that I have thus far come across.

In the early chapters of the book,1-13, the author paints a vivid and thoughtful picture of the young Ronald Reagan. Anyone seeking to understand Reagan, the man, will certainly find these chapters to be enjoyable and enlightening. Those interested in all aspects of Reagan's life and career will find the remainder of the book to be equally well researched and just as informative. And, because of the author's thoroughness and attention to detail, the reader will likely be able to put many events during Reagan's early life in proper perspective. Bottom line: This is a great book.

The Youth, The Actor, The Union Leader...The Budding Politician

Ronald Reagan is one of those figures who present two lives to the biographer, frequently leading to biographies that focus on one aspect or another. "Early Reagan" is different in that it tells his story from birth to the eve of his entry into full time politics, encompassing his youth, movie career and his gradual immersion into public affairs.

Many think of Reagan as a movie actor who used his acting skills to build a second career in politics. That is true to an extent, but author Anne Edwards shows that for Reagan politics was a part of his life from his earliest days. Born to an alcoholic Irish American father and a devout Protestant mother, "Dutch's" early life in Illinois was one of hard time supported by domestic stability. From his father Dutch learned an abhorrence of intolerance and an interest in politics. From his mother he gained his lifelong religious faith. Coming of age in the Depression, Dutch early learned to make his own way, spending summers as a life guard, and playing football in High School and at Eureka College. While majoring in economics at Eureka he became involved in student government and issues affecting the administration of the College. In his youth he became a strong Democrat and supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His search for employment led him to Iowa where he became a radio announcer, including a stint as a Cubs broadcaster.

After making his way to Hollywood, Reagan became an employee of Warner Brothers where he became a staple of "B" movies. During this time he became involved in the Screen Actors Guild which he would serve as president for six years. I had always thought of his union presidency as a figurehead position of a rather insignificant organization. On the pages of this book we read of his leadership in negotiations with the studios, his struggles against Communist infiltration and his management of strikes during his tenure. The reader comes away with an impression of Reagan as one very involved in important issues of professional and national significance.

This was the time of his life during which Reagan loved, lost and won: first girlfriends in Dixon and Iowa then his first wife, Jane Wyman. Edwards depicts Wyman and Reagan as being incompatible teammates whose divergent interests and careers made a failure of their marriage. Then came Nancy. This book examines Nancy's story that she first came to Ronnie for help in distancing herself from another Nancy Davis who was associated with Communist front organizations. Edwards suggests that the story of their first meeting does not seem plausible, but however they met, theirs was a love story with which we have become familiar.

During his acting career and union service, Reagan was influenced by multiple conservative figures in and out of the field. Many suggested that he seek political office. His own principles were becoming more important than his party allegiance as he gradually shifted toward the Republican Party. As early as 1950 he abandoned the Democrats to support Richard Nixon for U.S. Senator.

One fact that I found to be interesting was Reagan's service in the horse cavalry between the wars. This helped him develop his equestrian skills and secured him a place in the Army when World War II came.

After the war Reagan had his period of most intense union activity as his movie career was winding down. He found employment in television, with General Electric Theatre and Death Valley Days, as well as a spokesman for General Electric. During his travels to G.E. facilities he honed his political message and generated a legion of voters who heard him, met him and would later support him. At the end of the book Reagan has just about completed his transition from actor to politician, as he gave "The Speech", "A Time for Choosing" in support of Barry Goldwater on October 27, 1964.

I found this book to be very well written. It held my interest throughout and I learned much about Reagan that I did not previously know and gained a much greater appreciation for the man he was before he became president. This makes it a very enjoyable and worthwhile read.

A Reagan biography with a different focus

This book is an interesting exploration of the life of Ronald Reagan from childhood through the time he becomes Governor of California. It is well-researched, balanced, and complete in its scope. I had always wondered how a person might go from B actor to President, and this book helped fill in the blanks.
