Even though I have never taken a sensory course before, this book allows me a greater understanding of the information without bogging me down with complicated terms and lofty prose. I have collected a variety of Sensory materials (articles, manuals, books, etc.) through the years, and I hadn't found a book more complete and updated than this one. It has extremely useful tips for Sensory leaders, from building a Sensory Lab to Multivariate Statistical techniques you can apply. As Sensory Analyst, I highly recommend this book either for students or professionals.

This is one of the best sensory text books I've used through college and into my career. The value of this text is that it explains industry based sensory evaluations and provides sensory sheets and data pages that can be used for sensory projects. It may be missing some information on sensory theory, but its value is in how it can be applied to a practical setting.

African Brush Fire Wars

Disclaimer: I am not a gamer and do not know anything about it. However, I am African military historian and will review the book from this perspective.

The coverage of the various conflicts is generally accurate and provides a good synopsis of the major operations or conflict. The sample organization are also historically correct for most of the know units, some of the terrorist organizations and a few of the units were done via educated guess. The various units covered include all the big players; Rhodesian SAS, Selous Scouts, Greys Scouts, Recce, Para Bats, Flechas, 32 Buffalo Battalion, RLI, and BSAP to name but a handful. As well all the major terrorist organizations are covered, with advisors and other outside supporters. The chapter on recent African conflicts covers operation Barras. Overall this is not an academic work nor is it meant to be. However a lot of effort went into this book to be as accurate as possible and I find that respectable.

Good, but perhaps rushed.

First, a little basic info on Force on Force and a foundation for my review: Force on Force is a very scenario oriented game. Due to the often one-sided nature of asymmetric engagements it is necessary to set up the scenario with equivalent asymmetric objectives and carefully balanced troop configurations. Finding the proper balance requires a lot of play-testing and fine tuning.

My main interest in this book is for the Rhodesian Bush Wars. The Rhodesian scenarios are quite interesting and provide quite a bit of diversity. Although there is a fairly large-scale Fireforce scenario, I would have liked to see a smaller scenario set up as sort of a quick to play option. The first (and only thus far) scenario I've played out of this expansion is "Down on the Farm". The background and general concept of the scenario is well thought out, however, the troop configuration seems to be very out of balance and resulted in some overly one-sided battles. It seems as though the expansion was sort of rushed to the printers before the all of the scenarios had enough play-testing time. Adding some additional (tested) scenarios would have been great as the book isn't extremely thick. It isn't a problem to tweak and add new scenarios on my own, but part of the reason for buying an expansion is for the authors to research and balance these types of things out.

As with other expansions and main rule book, the pictures and page layouts look very good. Although this may sound like kind of a tough review, I would buy it again knowing what I know now. It does look like the authors put a lot of work into pulling together the book and given some more time in development their great work could have been even better.

JRD was a real visionary. I am very very much impressed by his leadership qualities, for me he is a legend in the Indian business and industrial community. There is no one who can come closer to his abilities.

Poorly written book on a wonderful life

This book on JRD Tata is extremely one sided. Reading it gives you the impression that the author has deliberately chosen to ignore actions which are controversial or not so palatable. I do not think a biography should be written in this way. No personality is black or white, invariably it is grey; and an objective biographer should neither try to idolize nor put down his subject. Maybe it is a problem with all biographies written during the subject's lifetime. Especially in cases where the biographer has secured the cooperation of his subject and feels it would be letting him down if he were to publicize certain aspects which may not necessarily be in favourable light. Nevertheless, whatever the criticism of the way in which this book is written, I must say that there is a lot one can learn from JRD Tata's life. Here was a man who inspite of being a successful businessman and head of an industrial empire was extremely sensitive and humane. Inspite of being born into riches, he was extremely caring and considerate to the cause of his employees, shareholders and above all to his country. He always thought that economic enterprise should further and not harm the cause of a nation. Infact it is written in the book that he has probably fired an employee only once or twice in his whole lifetime. There is a lot one can learn from his life on managing men . One realises after reading this book that provided the person at the top has a conscience, capitalism and free enterprise need not be solely greed and ugliness. It can further the general good. JRD who was an extremely succesful industrialist aptly demonstrated this in his lifetime. To Lala's credit, this aspect does come out very clearly in the biography.

His achievements are undeniable, and the book is an enlightening read even though the biographer's style does nothing to help the reader. How I wish someone like David McCullough could do justice to JRD's unique life!

Becoming More of a Serial

I've been loving the Kronberg Crimes series since the first volume appeared. A cross-dressing female epidemiologist in Victorian London who matches wits with Sherlock Holmes—what's not to love? These books are smart and the characters are well-developed. That said, this volume doesn't work as well as a stand-alone as the first two volumes did. There's no mystery intrinsic to this volume, just another episode in the multi-book narrative, and if you haven't read one of the earlier volumes, you'll have a hard time following what's happening. I'll keep reading every book that comes out in this series, but I'd prefer volumes that work well in isolation, as well as working as part of an on-going narrative.

Interesting series with a twist on Sherlock Holmes

We have always been tantalized and fascinated with stories of women who crossdress as men in order to achieve their dreams, hide their pasts, or escape dangerous situations. Women who take the place of their men in war, like Melinda Blalock, are heroines. Women who masquerade as men in order to become members of orchestras or bands, like Billy Tipton, gave a clandestine furtiveness to the history of American Jazz. Women who contributed to modern medicine in the guise of men, like Margaret Ann Bulkley, who ended her military career as Inspector General of Military Hospitals, overcame the barriers presented by their sex to excel in their chosen fields. In fiction, the woman who must hide her true self in a world of frockcoats and trousers presents a wealth of dramatic possibilities. Glenn Close gave a tragically beautiful performance in Albert Nobbs, a film about a woman who works as a male waiter in a hotel, hoping to save enough money to open a small tobacco shop, who is given a glimpse of the happiness she could be experiencing in sharing her life with a likeminded female partner.
Annalie Wendeberg has created just such an intriguing character in her Sherlockian series, the Anna Kronberg thrillers. Anna Kronberg has taken on the disguise of a man in order to attend medical school, complete her training, and practice medicine. She remains undiscovered until she is called to perform an examination on the corpse of a cholera victim. Her secret is quickly discarded by the detective evaluating the case, the great Sherlock Holmes. So begins Wendeberg’s continuing series about Dr. Kronberg, as she helps Holmes unravel the mystery of the cholera patient and a threat of biological warfare, becomes a prisioner of Holmes’ archenemy Moriarity, and has to flee for her life from Moriarity’s murderous henchmen.
Kronberg is a wonderful character, prickly, independent, analytical, intelligent, and often unreasonable, but grounded in altruism and a deep love for her father, who always encouraged her and never constrained her ambitions. Holmes is presented as a brilliant but flawed individual, damaged by the psychological torments of his childhood, and with a mildly autistic inability to respond with appropriate human reactions to emotional situations. Much like the Mary Russell books by Laurie King, the Kronberg stories show Holmes drawing emotionally closer to his distaff companion. The male masquerade aspect of the stories is handled deftly, with a great deal of insight into what care someone like Anna must take in maintaining the illusion of masculinity, and the stresses it induces. It would best serve the reader to begin with the first book in the series, as this third volume stands alone only with some difficulty, but it is a welcome addition to the chronology and whets the appetite for the next episode.

Great ending of a fantastic trilogy

The third and final novel of Wendeberg's Moriarty series is a worthy last glimpse of an amazing view of the Sherlock Holmes story and Moriarty's downfall. I especially enjoyed this story, especially after the darkness of THE FALL. That's not to say that THE JOURNEY isn't dark--it's Victorian England and Europe, after all, and Wendeberg doesn't spare us the seamy side of our history--but there's a spot of light at the end that's missing in THE FALL. Thank you, Annelie Wendeberg, for another enjoyable take on the Sherlock Holmes story; I appreciate the research, the time, the writing skills, and your vision of making this trilogy as wonderful as it is.

We are introduced to Kyle in the first of the Fortune's Children series Hired Husband. We learn that Kyle is a millionaire playboy. In this book, Kyle learns that his grandmother Kate has left him a ranch in Wyoming, but for him to inherit it he must live there for at least six months. Kate and all her wisdom knew that ten years ago Kyle had a summer romance with Samantha Rawlings, neighbor of the Wyoming ranch. Kate also knew that Sam's daughter was Kyle's. So, match-making from "beyond the grave" she makes sure that Kyle is put into a position that he is sure to find out about his daughter. How Kyle and Sam handle the situation is beyond Kate's control.
I am starting to see how the series will unfold and I am not only enjoying it, but I can't wait for the next one.

GOOD BUT NOT GREAT

This book started out really good. Well written and a great story line. Unfortunately, a little more then halfway through it started to die. I guess what got to me the most was the repetitiveness of the characters thoughts. Even more so, another pet peeve of mine is constantly switching POV's, and especially without any warning! In the end, it did finally pick up, again. It was good enough that I was able to get through it, though in my opinion it could have been much better. I have read at least one other book by this author and enjoyed it, so I know the potential is there, and hey, we all can have a bad day, so to speak.

Excelente novela!!! Me encantó la forma en que está narrada, y me enamoré de algunas frases que yo considero fantásticas porque en dos renglones la escritora es capaz de resumirnos la historia que están viviendo sus protagonistas. A modo de ejemplo les transcribo esta escena entre Gerard y Sofía: “…Solo podía significar que ella estaba poniendo punto final a la relación, a los retazos y a los pedazos incompletos que él le había dado”.
Son tres amigas con tres historias de amor, y como dice la sinopsis, las tres son muy diferentes pero muy unidas entre sí. Las historias de amor son preciosas. Por momentos uno se relaja con la lectura y disfruta de los avances de la trama, pero en otros corremos a la par de los protagonistas. Yo no diría que es solo una novela romántica, sino una novela donde el amor y los valores son los protagonistas. Hay una lealtad muy grande entre las amigas, hay relaciones familiares donde el amor se refleja en cada gesto y en cada diálogo. Es una novela completa y compleja, narrada de forma impecable y simple. De las tres historias de amor, mi preferida fue la de Gerard y Sofía, dos personajes que me conquistaron por su forma especial de ser, con una historia de amor que me mantuvo pegada a las páginas. Hay de todo en la novela, ternura, suspenso, lucha, pasión, amor... Muy recomendada!!!

Llegue a esta novela por pura casualidad y lo primero que me detuvo fue su portada y su titulo ... solo me queda decir que ha sido una excelente novela desde el inicio hasta el final. Tres amigas que parten a una aventura, su amor incondicional, lealtad, entrega, humildad, su complicidad. La autora hace una narración en mi humilde opinión perfecta y limpia de errores, cada párrafo es bien llevado en el tiempo. La historia de estas amigas me cautivo y me enamoré de todos ellos por su sencillez. Hasta los nombres de los protagonistas han sido perfectos, elegantes, los lugares bien descritos que nos hacen recrearnos y ver cada lugar como si estuviésemos presentes. Recomiendo 100% que hagan la travesía y conozcan la historia de estas amigas inseparables. Felicitó a la autora por su primera entrega y el reto que le queda será superarla. Enhorabuena!!
