Becky Lamb is a builder, junker, repurposer, blogger, crafter, teacher, wife, and mother of three. She likes to say she was weaned on decoupage glue and feels blessed to be raised by a mom who decorated their home on a very limited budget. Becky has been crafting and creating as long as she can remember and discovered her love for building after “retiring” in 2000 from teaching elementary school. Her husband patiently taught her to use power tools and she has continued to hone and develop her skills and style. When not building, Becky enjoys spending time outdoors with her family in her home state, Montana.

DIY pallet project must have book!

I've been following her blog and pinning her projects on Pinterest for quite sometime. Her book is great for beginners and experts alike. It has great tips to get you started, she is so creative and I admire her work so much! I've been so fortunate to find her ideas and have them inspire me within my own home, it's very difficult finding furniture in Okinawa so this book and her blog have been an amazing help in furnishing our home with the little resources we have on this island. This book is definitely worth checking out!

Crafting with Class

One of my hobbies is browsing the free section on Craigslist, and I've recently been noticing a lot of pallets up for grabs. Continuing with this train of thought, I called some local businesses (grocery stores, home depot, etc.) to see if they had pallets to give away as well. I wanted to make something with all this wood, but I wasn't sure what, so I bought this book. I was really happy that it offered suggestions on where to get pallets, and many of the suggestions lined up with my own searching, and was most excited that it included a section on pallet quality. One of the things I had trouble with on my own was collecting a lot of pallets, and having discrepancies in quality, size, and color. Thanks to this book I now know why!

Beyond this basic information I was quite happy with the things this book recommends to build with pallets. The projects range from easy (key hanger) to pretty hard (wine bar), and each instruction is easy to follow. Lamb also includes overviews of all the tools one may need while working with pallets, and includes which auxiliary parts may be necessary (metal hooks, etc.). I also love that Lamb includes ideas for what to do with pallet scraps such as a memory game. Since one of the main reasons I got this book was to reduce global waste, and get into recycling wood into art, I very much like her 'use every part approach.' Very cool book for the handyperson of any age! Could see it being a really fun time for a dynamic parent/child pair.

Becky Lamb Knows Her Stuff- Crafting with Wood Pallets is Destined to Become a Gift-Giving Favorite!

CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS by BECKY LAMB is a very eye-catching book. Take a look at the cover. What do you see? You see 4 very functional wood projects crafted from hardwood pallets or crates.This book was well thought out. Even the cover is constructed of an easy to grasp non-slip plastic material that will clean up easily even if your project gets a bit messy. The pages are high gloss making them very readable and easy to see. All pictures are colorful, informative and detailed. The book is complete with a Table of Contents, an Index, a list of Resources in the back and it even has a Metric Conversion chart as well. Right off the bat, I can see that Becky is very organized; she knows her stuff!

Her Introduction gives the reader some background about her and how she became involved in the art of Pallet Creations.I really appreciate that little detail. Her Pallet 101 segment details what a pallet is, what it is made of, using the right pallet for the right project and the tools you'll need to craft your projects.

Each of the 25+ projects includes a detailed explanation of its usefulness, the tools you'll need to make it, detailed pictures and assembly instructions including the time it should take to make and its level of difficulty (beginner, intermediate or expert). Many of the projects include Pallet Pointers, useful tips to help you create a nice looking handy household item. Becky really has thought of everything to help you make some wonderful pallet creations including sites on the Net loaded with more pallet and crate projects. Once you see this book there is a very good chance that you'll want to purchase a few more copies for friends and relatives. This will quickly become one of your gift-giving favorites. I showed my copy to 2 or 3 friends and they are chomping at the bit to either borrow mine or they have hinted to me that CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS would be a gift from me that they would cherish for a very long time.

Mind-bender!

This novel has squarely science as the hero with well researched and thought-out ideas on how humanity could survive a cataclysmic event in Earth's history. Makes The Matrix seem like a video-game in comparison to the plot laid out here supported by well rounded characters which takes you through a cliffhanger ending.

This kind of funny and unusual material makes TELEGRAM! a perfect book to browse through in the fashion of a coffee table book. Linda Rosenkrantz is an able and witty guide as she leads us through telegrams historic and momentous, and just plain silly.

DELIGHTFUL AND ADDICTIVE - PACKED WITH SURPRISING INSIGHTS

This book is on my telephone table and I pick it up every time I pass by. In a pre-email era, the arrival of the Western Union envelope was a cliff hanger. When words were money, the messages were distilled to their bare bones: joy, despair, longing, and witty one upmanship are a few. Most of the telegrams involve familiar celebrities, artists, and historical figures who are suddenly illuminated by this verbal economy. To me, the thrill is not so much historical fact but the surprising insight into the sender. Writers and anyone interested in language usage need this book. This book is addictive.

A fascinating book!

I got this book for my husband, who loves offbeat approaches to history, but when I started to thumb through it, I found that I couldn't put it down. There's lots here for the history buff--running from the Civil War to 9/11 (sympathy wires from Putin and the Pope), but the book is also a wonderful collection of funny, clever, warm, romantic, spiteful and sometimes tragic snippets of prose by great wordsmiths like Abraham Lincoln, Ernest Hemingway, and W.C. Fields. There are things in here that made me laugh out loud and others that brought a whole new perspective to historic events.

About the Author
For the past three decades Dennis Curtin has been an editor, author, and publisher in photography and computing. His latest books on digital cameras and digital photography have been widely praised for their quality and simplicity. They have been widely used in schools, by most of the armed services, many police departments, and even a number of major camera companies to train specialists in photography. On the publishing side, Dennis was editor-in-chief of one of Time-Warner's educational divisions and also held similar positions in Prentice-Hall's technology and engineering program and Prentice-Hall International. In those roles, he has worked extensively with Ansel Adams and other leading photographers of our generation. In his roles as publisher, editor, and author Dennis has been fortunate to edit, publish or write many best-selling books in photography and computing.

Required reading for SX30is owners

This book is incredibly informative. I use the book in conjunction with the CD. The spiral book is in B&W, but the PDFs on the the CD are in color. It's a little awkward to print the color sections of the CD for reference, but the information is so good that it's worth it for me. This book unlocks the secrets to SX30is. This an incredible camera with a ton of neat features that I'd never have known about without help. This book walks you through all the steps needed to complete whatever picture taking process you want to perform. I can now use my camera to it's full potential.

If you own a Canon SX30is, get this!

A very clear manual and thorough. Much clearer than the manual that came with the camera. I learned a lot and use more functions with this multi-featured camera that I would have otherwise.
The CD that comes with the book (the book is in black and white) has a full color pdf version of the book and links to brief videos for demonstrations of key points.
As far as I can tell, all of the camera's powerful features are explained clearly, even histograms.
Highly recommended for everyone, except super-savvy pros that don't need this information.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I have used Canon cameras for years, yet the SX30 was a real disappointment at first. It is not an intuitive interface, and only a very short start-up booklet came with the camera. There is an online instruction book, but I need something printed "in hand." So when I discovered this guide, I was thrilled. Thanks to the author!

In contrast to recent behind-the-scenes narratives describing the realities of the restaurant business (e.g., Irene Daria's Lutece: A Day in the Life of America's Greatest Restaurant, LJ 11/15/93), Kitchens is social analysis. Sociologist Fine (Talking Sociology, Allyn & Bacon, 1989) uses the "negotiated order" approach, coupled with a methodology of interviewing and participant observation, to examine how internal and external interrelationships have created the current food industry?including its workers, organization, economics, and aesthetics. While written in an accessible style with a cogent introduction and helpful summaries at the end of each chapter, this ethnography will probably be most useful to those with a knowledge of or an interest in sociology. A Review of Fine's "Kitchens"

There are two reasons to read this book. First, Fine offers an in-depth analysis of the restaurant kitchen life by studying four restaurant kitchens in the St.Paul-Minneapolis area. In a society which is enamored with eating out, this can help us understand what really takes place behind closed doors. Fine has taken the time to understand the kitchen life through the study of the trials and tribulations of chefs, as well as enrolling in cooking classes at a vocational college to understand the training process that many of these individuals have experienced. Second, Fine offers an in-depth analysis of organizations through his study of these restaurants. While this is often lost on those not steeped in the social sciences, scholars interested in the study of organizations and/or the symbolic interaction approach will find it both entertaining and challenging to follow, interpret, and critique this perspective. Overall, this is a lively read that is hard to put down.
