Martin Tompa is a Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and an Adjunct Professor of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington. He teaches courses on discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, design and analysis of algorithms, and other related topics. Outside of work he plays cards as often as possible.

It will interest people who love puzzles, math

While the cover says "card play," think "math games" and "math puzzles." Winning Schnapsen teaches probability concepts along with the play of the game. It will interest people who love puzzles, math, games, and just to be challenged. Stories of the author’s family are interwoven with the card play examples, giving insight into the tumultuous times in Europe of the 1920s to 1940s. Highly recommended!

The best book on Schnapsen that is out there

This is the first book worldwide that systematically discusses strategies for
successful play of Schnapsen. No prior knowledge of the game is necessary to
read the book. Using examples from real game situations, there is discussion of
different aspects of the strategy, from basic techniques such as trump control
in the endgame to throw-in, expected gain, and discarding valuable cards to
deceive the opponent. The final chapter contains examples from all the
previously discussed areas of strategy, embedded in stories from the family
history of the author's father from the interwar period to emigration during
the Second World War. The detailed and thorough analyses will definitely help
to improve your game. If you want to learn Schnapsen or are already a
passionate player, this is the book to get!

No New Information In This Book. Definitely Not Worth It.

The back cover of this book advertises that the reader will be enabled to "peek into the mind of a fascinating criminal," but after having read this book, there's very little that is fascinating about this man or this crime. In fact, there's nothing in here that I hadn't already heard on the news plenty of times before.
The book consists of a series of conversations between Lyle Menendez and Norma Novelli, the publisher of some newsletter that no one's ever heard of. The conversations give you a narrative of the Menendez trial through the eyes of Lyle Menendez. In them, you'll find Lyle to be extremely arrogant, but also fairly educated and mild-mannered.
I grew up in a city close to Beverly Hills, and I'd have to say that Lyle Menendez is no different from most people who live there. He was raised in wealth and comfort and he knows no other way of life, and that explains his pompous attitude. Lyle Menendez isn't the "brilliant criminal mind" that they build him up to be. The only difference between Lyle and normal people is that he and his brother killed their parents. The prosecution in his trial argued that the brothers killed their parents in order to receive their inheritance and collect from their parents' life insurance policies. The brothers claim that the murders resulted from years of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by their father. After reading this book, I'm inclined to believe that it was probably a combination of both reasons.
Aside from the fact that this book offers very little new information, I also didn't like the way in which Norma Novelli claimed to have been manipulated by Lyle Menendez. Menendez does about 99% of the talking in these conversations. He tells Novelli almost everything, and all she does is sit there listening and recording the conversations. She clearly knew that she could profit from this line of communication she had with Lyle, and that's exactly what she did by writing this book. In fact, she's the real manipulator for taking advantage of the trust and confidence that Lyle had in her. She isn't a victim at all, and it seems absurd for her to make such a claim.
There are plenty of other more useful books and websites that one can look to for information on the Menendez case. This book isn't worth it.

The murderer in his own words!

This book reveals a side of Lyle Menendez, that will perhaps be a shock to many people. It's a book based on conversations between Norma Novelli and Lyle, while he was awaiting his first trial. It quickly becomes clear that Norma doesn't believe that Lyle was abused by his parents. She mentions how he with pride mentioned that this case was one of the biggest ever in America. The book even includes a letter that he wrote to a former girlfriend, telling her how to testify in court. Throughout the book, Lyle is described as a cold and manipulative person, who Norma believes is a remorseless killer.

No Style With Lyle

This book consists of transcripts of some phone conversations between Lyle Menendez and the author before and during the brothers' first trial. You really need to be up on the case to know what's being said. If you know who everyone was in the trial (Dr. Oziel, Judalon Smyth, etc.) then the book can be of some use to you. Don't look here for a compelling description of the crime, the planning, or even life at home with the Menendez'. What you will get is an insight into the character we know as Lyle - confirming the intelligent, cunning, cold hearted manipulator we knew gratis Court TV. The book is historically important as a trial supplement and reading is recommended to those familiar with the case.

MANSOUR KHALID is former Sudan Minister of Foreign Affairs, and councillor and advisor to the late John Garang, the founder and leader of the Sudan People s Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/SPLM). He has also served as Sudan s Minister of Youth and Culture and Minister of Education. As a foreign minister during the former President Jaafar Nimeri s regime, Khalid negotiated the first peace agreement that ended the North-South civil war in 1972. He is author of several books including: The Government They Deserve (1986), Numeiri and the Revolution of Dis-may (1984), and War and Peace in Sudan: A Tale of Two Countries (2003).

Wonderful stories

I listen to Tinyburg Tales on BBN (The Bible Broadcasting Network) every Saturday evening on my way to work. I was delighted upon discovering that there were books about this delightful little town. I found this book to be a joy to read. It is about a little town and the people who live in it. It is a collection of short stories and the values taught in these stories is very inspirational. Thiese stories will make you laugh, cry and truly inspire the reader.
I would recommend this book for all ages and I know I will purchase other books by this author.

Don Hellriegel is Emeritus Professor of Management in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. Dr. Hellriegel joined the faculty at Texas A&M in 1975. He has also taught at the Pennsylvania State University and the University of Colorado. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. from Kent State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington. His research interests include organizational behavior, the effects of organizational environments, managerial cognitive styles, and organizational innovation and strategic management processes. His research has been published in a number of leading journals. Dr. Hellriegel served as Vice President and Program Chair of the Academy of Management, President Elect, President, and Past President. He has also served a three-year term as Dean of the Fellows Group of the Academy of Management. He has also been Editor of the Academy of Management Review and served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. Dr. Hellriegel has performed many other leadership roles, including President, Eastern Academy of Management; Division Chair, Organization and Management Theory Division; President, Brazos County United Way; Co-Consulting Editor, West Series in Management, Head, Department of Management (TAMU); Interim Dean, Executive Associate Dean, Mays School of Business (TAMU); and Interim Executive Vice Chancellor (TAMUS). Dr. Hellriegel has consulted with a variety of groups and organizations, including 3DI, Sun Ship Building, Penn Mutual Life Insurance, Texas A&M University System, Ministry of Industry and Commerce for the nation of Kuwait, Ministry of Agriculture for the Dominican Republic, AACSB, and Texas Innovation Group.

John W. Slocum, Jr. is an Emeritus Professor in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He has taught at the University of Washington, Penn State, Ohio State, International University of Japan, and the Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College. Dr. Slocum has been awarded the Alumni Citation for Professional Accomplishment by Westminster College and the Nicolas Salgo, Rotunda, and Executive MBA Outstanding Teaching Awards at SMU. He holds a B.B.A. from Westminster College, a M.B.A. from Kent State, and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of Washington. He is Past President of the Eastern Academy of Management, the 39th President of the Academy of Management and Editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management, Decision Science Institute, and the Pan-Pacific Institute. He serves as co-editor of the Journal of World Business and the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies and Associate Editor of Organizational Dynamics. Dr. Slocum has consulted for organizations including ARAMARK, Baylor Hospital, University of North Texas Health Science Center, LBJ School at the University of Texas, Celanese Chemical Corporation, Pier 1, NASA, and Brakke Consulting. He is a regular speaker for many senior executive development programs, including the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, SMU, and Lockheed Martin. He is currently on the Board of Directors of ViewCast Corporation, Kisco Senior Living, and GoToLearn.

Richard W. Woodman is Anderson Clayton & Co. and Clayton Fund Professor of Management at Texas A & M University, where he teaches organizational behavior, organization development, and research methodology in the Lowry Mays College and Graduate School of Business. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Oklahoma State University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. From 1993-97, he served as department head and he is currently the coordinator of the Ph.D. program in the Department of Management. His research interests focus on organizational change and organizational creativity. His published work can be found in many journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Group & Organization Management, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, and the Strategic Management Journal, among others. Dr. Woodman is co-editor of the JAI Press annual series, Research in Organizational Change and Development. He is currently on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Applied Behavioral Science Review, and the Journal of Organizational Change Management and previously served on the boards of the Academy of Management Review and the Journal of Management. He has also served as national program chair and division chair of the Organization Development and Change division of the Academy of Management. In a previous life, Dr.Woodman was a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, worked in both the petroleum and banking industries, and served for several years as vice-president of a financial institution.

Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The editors kept Armstrong's voice true to the legend and honest in its depictions of his sometimes harsh life in New Orleans. However, Artmstrong's sense of humor and goodness shine through his story and the reader really learns to like him as a person as well as a great musician. As a native New Orleanian, I really enjoyed his descriptions of the city during that time. I look forward to reading this book again!

While this is no scholalry biography it is written with the feel of an oral history and reading it is much like having Satch relate these tales over a few drinks. Not only does it shed much light on the real person that Louis Armstrong was but it also reflects an era in old New Orleans that is absolutely fascinating to read about in the words of someone who lived there. This is a hugely enjoyable book on numerous levels and for fans of Armstrong it is indispensible.

All With A Smile

Love Loius Armstrong? How could you not? This is his childhood in New Orleans in Satchmo's own words. The reading is as colorful as his music, full of vitality and fun. Satchmo's take on life is clearly illustrated in this book. He greets life with a smile and takes troubles all with a smile. This book is an absolute joy to read. I can hear the music and feel the energy of those days in New Orleans by looking at the old photo on the cover. Young Louis Armstrong grew up dirt poor. But young Satchmo even as a young boy faced the world with a smile. His neighborhood nickname was, "Dipper" and at different times lived with his mother and her lovers (whom Louis called his, 'step-dads'), the Colored Waifs Home for Boys where he became the bugler and then leader of the band, and eventually, with his father. The passage where Louis describes how he became to play the cornet at the Colored Waifs Home for Boys is touching. I read as if I were sitting in a movie theater. Life in New Orleans was colorful and dangerous. Louis lived among the 'sportin' life -- pimps, prostitutes, honky-tonks, gambling, violence, and of course, music. Louis Satchmo Armstrong found his inspiration in this extraoridnary environment to become not only the most seminal figure in jazz in the twentieth century, but a most beloved man. Read this book slowly, you will want it to last.

About the Author
Huda AbiFares was born in Beirut in 1965. She holds degrees in graphic design from Yale University School of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, and specializes in bilingual typographic research and design. She has taught graphic design at the American University in Beirut, and is currently associate professor of visual communication at the American University in Dubai, UAE.

An excellent first on the subject

Not only does this book provide an excellent overview of the history of Arabic script and printing, but it also lays out a vision and guidelines for the development of contemporary Arabic fonts. The book also focuses on the history and state of Arabic printing (as opposed to Arabic calligraphy), and highlights the technical challenges that arose from the adoption of what essentially is a calligraphic script to mechanical (or digital) printing processes.
The book ends with a selection of type designs by contemporary Arab type designers, which gives the reader a feel of what is happening out there in this field.
I recommend this (beatifully designed) book to anyone who deals with Arabic publishing, design or type design.

As a mother of a bi racial child I highly disliked this book . For the simple fact that the "white people" were illustrated as being almost identical to the block people . If your going to show children our countrys history do it the right way.
